Travelling: Munich

So I've been looking into taking a trip with some college friends this May from around the 14th to the 20th, these dates are somewhat flexible but not much, and I was wondering if you guys could recommend stuff to do and see in Munich at around this time or in general. I'm fluent in German so the language shouldn't be a problem, I have never been to Munich though and because we're students and the flight will put us back a ways I'd like to hear if there's much to do in Munich that isn't too expensive.

It's a beautiful area and has some of the best food in Germany (IMHO).


See if you can find some recordings and practice in a Bavarian dialect. It'll help you out, as it's probably a little different than you're used to, but not so much as say Vorarlberger.

I was in Munich about a week ago. My honest opinion? It sucks. Really. Loads of expensive shops where you can't buy anything, and no real shops/bars. For example, I counted 2 Louis Vuittons, and 5 H&Ms. However, Bayern itself is awesome, so stay in Augsburg or Nürnberg instead. You can go into München for a day or two, and you don't have put up with the ridiculous shops.

I was in Munich in 2005 and had a great time. Great food, great beer, and lots of stuff to do. The Deutsches Museum is something of a technical/industrial museum that has an interesting collection of rare military equipment including an Me163 and a Ba349. The city itself is beautiful, with the usual cultural attractions you would find in any major European center (cathedrals, churches, opera house, town hall, outdoor markets, etc.). Nymphenburg palace is just outside the city and easily accessed via tram. It has a nice interior, but the gardens themselves are wonderful to walk when the weather is nice. Next door is also the Munich Botanical Garden, which is easily the best Botanical Garden I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot of them. Top it off with the Englischer Garten and its wonderful beer garden, and you've got a fun and relaxing vacation:

Stopped in Munich a few few years ago when on vacation in Europe with a group from high school. During the World Cup. When it was Nurnburg. Craaaaaaaaazy. Seemed like a nice place while we ere there, though I couldn't give much advice on it.
