Trade Port Bug?

Tried searching for this no luck so far so i figured id ask

playing Poland on Vh/VH just got my first port in Ingria, made it a trade port, yet i still cant make any sea trade routes. the port is there constructed and giving me income, but i cant make any trade routes.

when i go to the diplomacy screen it tells me my home territory ports are full not theirs.

any1 heard of this one b4.

possible reasons.

1. perhaps a bug cos my capital is land locked?
2. possible bug because im importing furs from Finland by land but its coming over a land bridge thing between Finland and Ingria
3. I cant trade with any1 because im at war with sweeden and they have the baltic locked in (i doubt this even if it was so, i should still be able to make the trade route it would just not generate any income)


any thoughts?

Trade tends to be hokey pokey with the land locked nations. My Russian campaign has trade going outbound from Ingria, the Crimea, and Rumelia.

update.

parantly your correct their quite buggy. even tho i didnt have trade acess with ottomans and they own a province right next to me, i had a trade route open up from my port to theirs randomly one turn. I still couldnt open new routes tho. Few turns later i get another trade port and im able to open 3 more trade routes giving me a total of 4 which is how many i should have with the first rank port.

BUT if i go into my trade screen all my trade routes are via land O.o even my trade route with GB is apparently a land route.

i am aware of that, but if they dont have a free slot when u look in diplomacy and mouse over it says "this nation does not have a free trade slot"

once i got the second port i was able to trade with several of the major nations which i had previously been unable to trade with. And my trade sheet still says its all land based.

i dunno its weird lol

I'm a bit late on this thread, and also new to this forum (this is my first post). ~:wave:

I also have some trouble understanding the trade system correctly. I'm playing Great Britain, short campaign, year is somewhere around 1730. I'm trading with everybody I can trade with, and still not all my ports in England, my capital province, are busy. And I get the same information that MY ports are full, so I can't make new trade agreements. I wonder why I should upgrade my ports anymore, if some of the existing ones do not open a trade route.

But I think I know why it shows all your trade routes as land based. As far as I understood it always shows the connection to your capital province. So if that one doesn't have a port, but it's connected via land route to another province of yours with a port, it is land based. For Great Britain all trading routes are sea based, and I don't think I can get any land based ones, even though meanwhile I own France.

I've seen this as well playing Prussia.

I could not trade as I was thinking I should be able to. Then I upgraded my port and suddenly there were options all over the place.

Sounds interesting. Will try today evening, when I'm out of office and conquering the world again. I thought upgrading the ports wouldn't make any sense as some of the ports in England already don't open trade routes.

I'm still searching for detailed information about trade, and trying to figure out things on my own as well, of course. This is my first successful campaign, after having a few tries at the beginning, when I had to cancel the campaign because I was about to become bankrupt. The only real difference between those few tries and now is proper diplomacy from the very beginning.

On those first tries I allied with too many countries, and when they went to war (partly between each other) I was in war with too many countries. It wasn't an issue handling their military, but through that I lost trade partners, and those new enemies started pirating most of my trade routes - always at the other end of the world, so I couldn't get rid of them myself.

I really think that diplomacy (and trade, being part of it) is one of the best ways to success in ETW - at least for GB. It's so different to RTW or M2TW, where you would earn your money in the provinces you own plus a little bit of trade. Diplomacy is so much easier now, but also so much more important.

For my current campaign I don't need to optimize anything anymore. I am already so dominant everywhere, and the cash flow is more than sufficient to keep me out of problems. I'm just collecting information to use it in my next campaign, where I will increase the difficulty to VH/VH.

That does indeed sound like a bug.

I have an idea of what is going on

Just say you start with Austria and get 5 land trade routes at the beginning of the game. these 5 land trade routes take up a spot in your trade route

So you develop a port and have 2 trade routes available but you do not have any open ports so you can't trade because you have 5 used but only 2 available

Now you build 2 more ports and have 6 available so you can finally open 1 sea trade route.

I think a land route doesn't require an open trade route but will use you your current and future trade routes, so you can't open sea trade route until you have more trade routs open then used


Bug or feature is hard to tell. May be a feature as to stop the initially landlocked empires from becoming super trading hubs


Another hard to notice feature is even if they are connected by land they also have to be connected by road so as United provinces owning Netherlands and Hanover are land connected but not road connected so a trade port in Hangover will not increase your trade routes until you own the province to the south of Hangover connecting them via road

No, this is not right. In my UP game, I was unable to create more than 3 sea trade routes due to the size of my only European trade port. When I noticed this, I set about a plan to capture another province with a trade port, but that was going to take a while. In the meantime, I opened up land trade routes with 2-3 other adjacent factions. By your account, this would have required me to get an extra 3-4 trade route slots via ports before I could open another one. This is not what happened. I eventually got my extra trade slots by spawning a new port town and building it into a commercial port. As soon as the most primitive level of port was ready, I was instantly able to open new sea trade routes, even though my land trade routes had increased while I was previously capped.

Guess I'm wrong Tincow but something is really fishy about trade either a bug or not well explained

I agree, but I think it's a bug, not something we're failing to understand.

So if you upgrade your ports then they will start trading? Atm i have 2 ports as Prussia where only one is conducting trade.
