Getting rid of a phantom "autorun.inf"
.
So these nasty trojans and malware are everywhere and whenever you stick your memo card on somebody else's computer it's infected. avast! merely cleans up the trojans but leaves their damned autorun file there, so does S-S&D. :gah2:
You can't view the phantom file even when the protect system files option is unchecked. You can't reach it searching either. How do you fraking get rid of it? ~:pissed:
TIA

Re: Getting rid of a phantom "autorun.inf"
Get a trial Kaspersky, remove the bugger ?
Re: Getting rid of a phantom "autorun.inf"
Does it run when the system starts?
Re: Getting rid of a phantom "autorun.inf"
And if it doesn't work you could use a Live CD, Live DVD or Live USB image from any Linux distribution: chances are that the SD is FAT anyways [and the NTFS 3G stack is now more or less ubiquitous among the more popular choices of Linux anyways]. So you should be able to simply remove the file without question from your device using any of their file managers; and if not there is always sudo + the cd and rm -f commands. In short the Live environment will give you full control over what files are on the SD according to its file tables and what are not. (Btw, you will want to empty the trash can/recycle bin if you use the file managers too!)
If afterwards the file still manages to respawn you may actually want to check your other system.

The trojan/virus has already been got rid of, but the now technically harmless yet annoying phantom autorun.inf resists. Isn't there any way not involving paid antiviri or Linux? :gah:

Re: Getting rid of a phantom "autorun.inf"
I never really trust the CMD shell for anything. Too cumbersome. Still, one can try to "del" that file using it.
(Run -> Cmd -> and then: DEL /F "H:\ave\fun\trying\to\spell\this\out\in\full\because\the\silly\cmd\can\t\cd\to\the\path\to\the\file\ properly")
I just don't expect it to work when removing a file as administrator through the ordinary file manager (explorer) doesn't work. (And if it is about hard disks I have a solid dislike of the tools Windows saddles you with. Partitioning? The world has advanced (read: gparted, kparted) beyond a cumbersome basic-style UI (read diskpart because the Windows GUI client simply doesn't work) ?)

Re: Getting rid of a phantom "autorun.inf"
Check msconfig. Start ---> Run ---> msconfig (as written here)
Go to "Start", then watch out for this "problem".
