Roman civil war (?)

Hi there.

First of all I would like to say how much adore this mod. (Alot! :2thumbsup: )

I've been playing it for some time, and been checking this forum aswell.

But now I have a little question; I would like to create some sort of civil war in my Romani campaign. However I cant create it as I did with other factions for the reason that they dont share their MIC with another faction. Now my question is: Is it easy to edit some files (and wich files) in order make the Romani MIC available to, for example, the KH?

Not really. My advice would be: Take out some faction (like the Casse or Saba), and modify them into a whole new faction, identical to the Romaioi. That's what I did with the Casse, turning them into a Makedonian shadow-faction. Oh yes, and you'll require BI for this to work :tongue:

Erhm, I don't know. Maybe when Megas Alexandros died? I don't know... But if you mean after that, there were occassions. Antigonos Gonatas' father Demetrios grabbed the rule of Makedonia from Kassandros, who was given Makedonia when Megas Alexandros' Empire broke apart.

I'm sorry, but are you trying to tell me that if (any) nation would become wealthy and powerful that nobody would try to rebel from the Empire? I'm sorry but that's just plain stupid...

Pretty much any faction can have its own civil war when it is big and rich enough. Greedy men will always try to rule. This is my the EB team wont have any civil war with any faction, because it could happen to any of them, and they don't want to favor one over the other.

But it is fairly easy to have a 'civil war' as other nations, just give a nation with the same MIC culture the settlements you want, rename them and voila you have an opponent.

With the romani, on the other hand, this is impossible. So I was wondering if there was a way to make the romani MIC's available to other nations.

Its more difficult, but you can do something similar to Maion. Although It would be difficult.

The Aedui-Arverni strife is in a sense a "Gallic civil war"; similarly, the different Diadochi are still in a sense waging a large-scale civil war over the empire Alex conquered, although in their case the splintering has been a fact for long enough to make that a pure rhetorical formality...

Simpler solution: Why did you don't try to empty a settlement in Italia, Raises tax into very high without a governor, and destroy all Happines structures? and add_population 10000000 as many as possible? They will rebel into Eleutheroi...

Personally, I view the lack of a Romani civil war as 'accurate' for the EB situation.

In real history, the Romani never had to seriously fight a strong Ptolemaic Empire. Because the Ptolemies basically destroyed themselves through internal infighting, and were too weak to resist Roman domination.

This isn't the case in EB. The Ptolemaic Empire is a very strong opponent, which Roma will have to fight hard to overcome.

So the lack of a civil war which did happen historically is made up for by a 'new' war that didn't happen. Egypt is basically 'another Carthage' for Roma to fight.

The Romani transition from Republic to Empire might have happened much more peacefully if Roma had a strong external threat to deal with at the same time.

And if Rome has strong external threat... they're still republic until now...

I'm not talking about historical accuracy and all that. I completly agree with the EB team to not have a Roman civil war. This is afterall not a Roman-centered mod.

I just would like to create my own little civil war. With, for example, Epeiros you can give away (FD) a number of settlements to the KH, rename and recolor the KH and you got a 'civil war'.

I almost always create a civil war when I control a sizeable amount of land, but with my Romani campaign I got going it is impossible to do it that way.

With the Romani this can not be done since no other factions shares MIC's with them. Thus my question is: How can I make the Romani MIC's available for another faction so they can recruit / retrain their legions?

Interesting question. I believe - I have not tried this yet - that you should:

1.- Make the units recruitable by another faction in EDB. To do that add the name of that faction to the bracketed faction code ( seleucid,) to the units recruitable in the respective roman barracks.
2.- Next you should make those units recruitable by said faction in EDU.
3.- Check that there are skins and sprites for these units for that faction in "descr_model_battle.txt". As roman units will have only one set of skins you just copy the respective line and rename the faction name to your selected "counter-faction". The dark side of it will be that both "loyal" and "rebel" roman soldiers will look exactly the same on the battlefield, so you rather have banners on.

NOTE - changes in EDU, EDB and DMB are fully save-game compatible, so you can safely try this, but do not forget to backup the original files! Good luck!:2thumbsup:

I will try that as soon as I'm behind my desktop again.

So there is no way to simply swap the MIC's? Well, I guess its not that much work afterall. (need to delete their original units aswell though)

I guess the Rebel Romans would have to take the place of an existing faction that has already been wiped out. Epirus, maybe, or KH.

Don't forget, the family member bodyguard unit will need changing as well, otherwise you'll have Rebel Romans being led by Greek generals.

Then you get into the destroyed factions' building tree, that needs changing to Roman....along with their default AI 'personality', to make them act like Romans....

Quite a lot to do.

I think it would be possible to take out some faction (like Saba or Saka) - something far away. Then turn them into Romans and script the event when the civil war starts, and what provinces the rebels would get. I'm not familiar with the EB script, but I think scripted appearance of factions is possible. It looks though that the amount of work is quite large here.

Nope, I was asking out of interest, for to my mind Macedonia seems to have been spared the destructive civil wars that wracked the late Res Publica Romana, Ptolomaic Egypt and Arche Seleuka.

That's true, but that was only because they were so vulrenable. Being threatened all the time ensures your subjects are glued to the central authority (in this case the Basileus), which in turn ensures there are no attempts to a civil war of any kind.

In a broader sense... all the Diaochi are those who put a "Civil war" into The Great Macedonian empire created by the Mighty Megas Alexandros... I just think... why Alexandros didn't name a clear sucessor? "The Strongest" is the one thing that put his empire crashing down.... what if he Say: "Ptolemaion" "Antiochos" "Antigonos" or else..... his in womb son?

There would be infighting nonetheless. If he would declare Ptolemaios, Seleukos would probably be angry due to his great abilities, as would Kassandros and the rest. It was inevitable for his Empire to break, sooner or later. Do you think Alexandros probably didn't know that?

Or Alexandros think his luitenants as a big, happy family, and can't think they someday stab each other.... and didn't honor his name...
