Can a protectorate gain their freedom?

I'm currently playing as Prussia and have both Sweden and Denmark as my protectorates, and have been giving them territory that I don't need for victory. My reasoning is that I get money for it and I don't have the hassle of upkeep etc. Having given France and UP to Denmark I've suddenly thought will they stop being my protectorate if they have more territory than me?

Just thought of something else while I wrote this, does having large protectorates count in the expansionist relations calculation?

I have had Poland as a protectorate declare war on me.

They will also go to war with others and if you fail to honor the alliance if they are attacked then you lose the protectorate status.

That is how they gain their independence back…

That's true, but silly. Protectorates should not be able to declare war. They're essentially a client state, and as such, don't get to call the shots.

Um the 13 colonies historically declared war on the Brits.

The 13 colonies weren't a separate nation under British servitude. They were British subjects who rebelled.

In my russian campaign (still playing) i gave 3 provinces to Dagestan and made them my protectorate. 4 years later they declared war on Georgia, the Persians, the Ottomans and me ...:inquisitive: Now, after 18 years of constantly war they conquered half of persia and the north east of the ottoman empire. But we are still "friends", no battle between us 'til now.

Don't think so - Spain and GB both start with a large protectorate. :yes:

protectorates that cannot rebel is just silly. no nation want to be ruled by others. if its strong enough or you let it become strong enouhg its natural that a protectorate will eventually attack you. why would it need your protection and pay you half its income if it is strong enough to oppose you?

Thanks for the help on that one. It was beginning to feel like an exploit as it does make protecting your borders a lot easier.

Guess I'll carry on giving them land and see what happens!

Just to clarify, I think it's fine if a protectorate decides it doesn't want to be a protectorate anymore. Of course, they should get spanked in the diplomacy system for backstabbing.

What I think should be impossible is for a protectorate to declare war on some 3rd party and then expect their big brother to finish what they started. Protectorates should not be dragging their protector into wars. If anything, it's the other way around. That's the tail wagging the dog, which is dumb.

At least the game should give us a special kind of warning if a protectorate declares war on someone. That way we can decide if we want to help them attack or just defend the protectorates borders.

Yeah, or the protectorate could ask the protector to go to war with faction X. If the protector says no, that's all there is to it.

If a protectorate declares war on its own, that should break the relationship with the protector and the protector should be able to decline participation in the war without negative repercussions.
