Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
Can you guys make the base barbarian unit size the same as the phalanx size or phalanx size smaller? Right now most late Roman armies and any Hellenic army can out number barbarians by around 10% or 20%...
Its rather underwhelming especially online.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
I see what you mean from a gameplay perspective, but is there any significant evidence that the "barbarians" of northern Europe were consistently able to mobilize significantly larger armies than their more populous Mediterranean counterparts? I'm not talking inflated Dei Bello Gallico numbers here...
On further reflection, if the barbarian factions were ever able to unite into a larger confederation as represented by conquering a large empire in the game, i suppose they would be able to mobilize a larger force from the various tribes... this would work for the levy units in the game (which are already as large as a phalanx if i am not mistaken), but could be unrealistic and overpowered for elites such as the Solduros.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
I think the Roman unit sizes are large enough as they are, I see no reason to make them even larger.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
LOL. Poor little Romies.
Well sweboz don´t need larger numbers, after all they are Sweboz. Now i think larger numbers on celtic levies that come with reforms lately wouldn´t be bad, however im not aware of the historycal accuracy of that.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
The Romans might have had a larger recruiting base but they had to spread out all over that huge frontier so while they had the ability to field a huge force, there was usually a delay between the initial encounter hitting a defeating a smaller frontier army -> massing a large enough force to crush the barbarian incursion.
Even during the fall of the Hellenistic Kingdoms, the Romans where everywhere with their armies so they many times locally out numbered.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
The base 50 size of the later Roman legionary units in EB1 is something of a "schtick" of theirs, but while somewhat unusual for "civilised" non-pike infantry of their quality and equipement level doesn't "break" the (AFAIK actually unwritten but nevertheless studiously enforced) quality-level to unit-size norms used in the unit design. No different from many of the lower-end "barbarian" line units of equal base "experience level", such as the Celtic longswordsmen, being base size 50.
The size caps are played to the hilt with higher-class Roman units, like the Antesigniani and Evocata.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
The main issue isn't the Romans its that any 20 unit army will probably be outnumbered 10-30% by a army with phalangites just because they have 80-40 more men per each phalanx * 6-8 phalanxes. :-\
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
You could always lower upkeep a bit more than before, at least that way they could field more armies if not bigger ones.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
He means it more for online battles, where things as upkeep don't affect the fairness of fullstack vs fullstack battles, kindoff hard to balance such battles. :sweatdrop:
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
Phalanxes are pretty much useless unless they're huge enough to have ebough of both frontage and depth, AFAIK. *shrug* What can you do ?
(Not play online ? :clown:)
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
Useless?:whip: Just a formation of 6 deep levies can hold off a massive frontal attack, extremely hard to beat them when they have thin inbreakable lines with massive numbers of flank guards as well.
Re: Bigger Barbarian Unit Sizes
Phalanx, where in the flaming depths of Bartix have you been?!?
@Watchman
No one except people like Ibrahim uses phalangites in depth though... I guess if they are weaker, that'd be great but I'd still enjoy seeing larger units of stuff in the North and East:).

I posted in the tourney tread saying I couldn't be part of the tourney because I've been way to busy with school lately. :dizzy2:
