ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
I just had my PC die on me yesterday, and having re-installed windows i am engaged in the slow process of installing my games once again.
After the usual irritating kerfuffle with Steam i eventually persuaded ETW to start installing off DVD 1
however, it did its stuff and steam said all was complete and it would start updating.
so what, exactly, is disk two for?
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
No data was kept?
I presume your disk was in a single partition?
I thought disc two had more data files, but thats it...
Hmm.
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
C was formatted, and i deleted the contents of my games partition because most of would need reinstalling these days anyway, gone are the days of re-linking the exe shortcut.
disk two does indeed appear to have data files, but the utterly ridiculous, stupid, unnecessary and cretinous steam installer does not seem interested, instead it is telling me that updating will be complete in 1.5 days!
i cannot help myself from expressing disgust that steam was ever made a core part of the install process.
i have even tried uninstalling the game and starting again, only for the same thing to happen again.
the install doesn't even ask me WHERE i want to put the game, steam just decides all these questions for me and makes a balls-up in doing so.
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
can anyone shed any light on the above?
on why the great god Steam has not deigned to recognise my disk 2, causing me to scream in apoplexy at my screen; "THE DISK IS THERE, DON'T RAPE MY INTERNET CONNECTION FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS, THE $^$%&%*£ DISK IS THERE!"

You should install steam on your D hard disk. Empire will automatically be installed on the same disk.

Correct.
All steam games go to the steam/steamapps folder.
Someone had problems with disc 2 being recognised a while ago. I think it was just the disc. They do get scratched.
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
sorry, the partition isn't a problem as i installed Steam on my games drive, just gave it as an example of Steam assuming things without good reason.
interesting about the scratched disk thing, i will check tonight, nut its not like my ETW disks have had much opportunity to get scratched yet.

disk 2 was never requested by the install process, so it cannot be that............
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
 I dunno, I just don't know.
If I had a video of what happened, it may help...but I'm sorry.
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
Did you buy the 'Special Edition' ?
I did and got two discs, I think (IIRC) the second Disc installs the 'Special Edition' stuff - and I had to initiate that seperately - now I have two Steam launch Icons on the dekstop - standard and Special.
BUT !!
All the bugs in 1.2 are still there and RTI is totally unplayable using it - looks like paying the extra 10 bucks entitles me to special disregard in updates?
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
It's probably of no use but I had to reinstall ETW last night - when all I really had to do was clear old mod files from the scripts folder:wall: - and of the approximate 14gb of installation files, around 10gb are on Disc 1 and over 4gb are on Disc 2, obviously making Disc 2 a substantial part.
Is it possible that your internet connection was interrupted at any stage?

Thought so.
But a dual layer DVD can only hold 8.5gb IIRC, checking now.
yup, its 8.5gb per disk max.

Funnily enough ETW worked fine for me when I re-installed XP. I just clicked on the Steam shortcut and it did some kind of updating thing, gave me new shortcuts and then worked.
I have lots of other games from before the reinstall that still work too, GTA:SA, Mount & Blade, you name it. So those days are definitely still with us :)
Re: ETW-SFE: what is disk two actually for?
with steam, you just copy the folder and after reformat, you place them back there and steam reconnects it all up.
