What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
Hey
I have searched the Internet and looked in many faqs to find the answer of what the generel skills actually do - in terms of game mechanics. But havent really gotten a clear and straight answear
I know that Commandstars improve the units under a generels command.
But what does it acutally do? Is it + 1 morale for every unit or what for each star or something else?
And If some one could do a scale of what 1, 2, 3, 4 etc command star does it would be great.
Same question for management and influence?
Cheers

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
First of all, for such things I urge you to go to the Ludus Magna, where all of the RTW mechanics are uncovered and exposed through meticulous research and quite often through mathematics as well. Here is the thread on command stars and their effect, with contribution from a CA programmer (!). So no need for me to repeat what it says; just go and see for yourself. Remarkable forum it is; the most useful one on .Org, much more useful than the guides.
As for influence, it gives a happiness boost, 5% per wreath I believe. Each management scroll gives a set income bonus. That is about all I believe. Some say influence adds to the bodyguard, but that is most likely not true, as being a FL or FH along with PersonalSecurity traits has the largest impact, followed by a small boost from your age (older you are; the more men you have). Influence seems to have no effect. In my campaigns I have countless 10-influence generals with 6-14 men in the bodyguard (Large Unit Size). All due to the many negative personal security traits.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
Hey
Thanks for the response.
The links you gave was very informative. But have a question.
JeromeGrasdyke mentions in the thread - a command radius which is influenced by the number of command stars.
So the morale bonus a general has of certain traits works only if the units are near the general?
Quote from JeromeGrasdyke:
"The general's command also controls his radius-of-effect, which is set to 30 m + 5 m * command + 2 m * influence".
Can somebody give me an idea of how long 30 meters are ingame?
Cheers

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
No the morale boni from traits applies to the whole army all the time and is not linked to command stars, its the main reason you don't see much command stars in EB.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
Command Stars are a very useful proposition, indeed that's why I always train up my Generals with brigands and the like before sending them to critical fights. A 10 Command General can "lift the spirits" of a whole army at an impressive distance, which effectively means he can be anywhere, and the most critical sectors with the lowly troops will not rout so fast.
Besides there is the added bonus to combat which, despite being a bit of a gray area, can be felt when fighting battles with different Generals and more or less the same troops. As the Romani, I know that having one of the well bred heavyweights with me can effectively force the Hastati to stay forever at the front, soaking casualties and tiring the enemy, therefore creating a plausible Romani legion tactical application.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
WHy is it impossible in EB to actually get 10 stars?
Even my main Makedonian general that killed off the entire Seleukid Empire with just him and one army only has 5.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
Well I was lucky with STHE Romaioi guy: he had all the good Command traits, plus I have a modded version which gives an additional star for every level of battle experience he gets plus takes out the penalty from "Lover of Beauty".

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
It looks like that without any modification to the traits, you can get 10 stars general only from sharp/xxxxx/vigorous guy... with condition that he nearly all time at the field and commanding generally outnumbered and outquality onits.... That was really hard to archieve with Roman or Greek army.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
The 'Command Stars and Cursus Honorum mod' by someone whose name I can't remember really helps with the gaining of command stars, which was a little overly hard in EB1.2. If you're having trouble gaining stars, or just like how badass it looks with a 10-star general on the campaign map, I'd highly recommend it.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
Command stars make your general seem more epic as well as some good bonuses and whatnot, but mostly the epicness.

Charismatic I presume.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
You presumely don't need it, though I would be my money you do.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
When it comes to those traits i have a general set of priorities, charismatic<sharp<vigorous
ie vigourous is the most important and i will never accept a FM without i'm unless im really stuck, after that obviously sharp and the charisma which is probably the least important in my opinion.
I'd imagine some people would dissagree with me but bear in mind i use my FM's for leading armies mostly so you really need that vigorous trait to prevent them from getting too tierd during campaign.

I still prefer sharp then vigorous, afterall, a general full of stamina, but with low or no command stars is simply not worth it. If he's not vigorous, just let him sit most of his time governing a good province for some extra cash and management bonus.

Nice to hear people are still, even now, getting something from that forum.

I prefer Sharp and Charismatic over Vigorous if it can't be helped, i currently have a FM come of age that is Sharp/Charismatic/Languorous that I'm gonna use as a general purely coz he has the understanding of strategy trait and is the eldest son of L.Cornelius Scipio AKA L.Africanus. It will be more challenging to make him a good general but I'm gonna enjoy it all the way. As for command stars being hard to get in EB 1.2 Hell yeah i agree, my current best is Scipio with 8 standing command stars only need 2 more till 10 mwahaha and that is without any modding just pure hard rigorous and HUGE battles :beam:

Well, The Romaioi seems soo easy to get better command stars because of their office and senatorial traits.... what's positon that your scipio currently hold, and what his past titles?

He currently holds no office, he has held all except for Pontifex Maximus. Titles? you mean traits? Er lets see seeing i'm too lazy to get a screen shot i'l just dictate his notable traits - Excellent Tactician, Leader of Men, Legendary Hero, Conqueror, Celebrated Triumphator, Sated Warmonger, Understanding of Strategy, Skilled Infantry Commander, Good Attacker and Understanding of Logistics. That's about it i think, he's not the Faction leader nor the heir since dentatus is still alive :beam:

IIRC, EB uses traits and maybe the script too, to keep command stars for the player low...

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
I'd like to know where the magical stars for rebel leaders come from.
One turn they have 0-3 then when they sally or you assault a settlement their 6-7 star generals.

Re: What does Command stars and other skills actually do?
I've found Nomadic generals get stars faster. Whether this is because they are often outnumbered or because their traits and retinue are better I'm not sure. Or maybe it is because they never have any money to play with?
