Books on armor and Sparta

Can anyone recommend books or websites that include historically accurate photographs or illustrations of armor or whatever military dress was worn by the armies of the ancient world. I am interested particularly in the Spartans and Romans, though I would like to see books and sites that depict the armor of other armies as well.

I also am looking for a book about Sparta. I was considering Sparta and Lakonia: A Regional History 1300-362 BC by Paul Cartledge as it is recommended in the EB bibliography section. However there is only one review for it on amazon, so I would like to know if this is a worthwhile read or if there is another book that you would more highly recommend.

Well a good looking book with some basic information (though not fully correct at some parts :dizzy2:) is The Spartan Army, by Nick Sekunda. Pretty basic about army structure and clothing, hair etc.

For more I gues you would have to go to more ancient sources and face death. :no: Though there are probably some more modern books about the Spartans which would spare some time. :2thumbsup:

Whilst it caused a lot of controvesy in the "Historical Hoplite Thread", "Greece and Rome at War" by Peter Connolly is a good all round text with lots of nice illustrations. A new edition came out in 1998 so bear in mind new info will have arisen since then.

There was a thread with all sorts of books you could read. Isn't it in there?

Probably but I think it was a thread a while back on the EB bibliography, which I couldn't find in the time I had.
