txtN slang

I suppose most members know what rhyming slang is. For the uninitiated: the Cockney art of rhyming slang replaces a word by a rhyming two-word phrase, part of which is then left out to deliberately conceal the original meaning.

Thus 'mate' becomes 'China' (from 'China plate' which rhymes with 'mate') and 'fart' becomes 'raspberry' (from 'raspberry tart').

Now I wonder if there is a new slang in the making: texting slang. This is a form of slang that replaces words by the results of the spelling correction software in mobile phones. Sometime these 'corrections' are absurd, hence their popularity. My family do this all the time and so do the friends of my kids.

Most of these words are Dutch and quoting them would be meaningless to non-Dutch readers. Let me just mention a simple example that everyone understands. A friend of my wife's is called Aletta, but my wife's mobile phone always suggests to change this into 'Blefta'. God knows why. But we call her Blefta ever since.

Does anyone here have a similar experience? I mean: dz NE1 hre av a like XperENs?

I was able to read all that without a single problem or slow down, now i'm :daisy:. :furious3:

I have tried, doubly so in the last few years, to say as far away from slang in my typing/writing as I possibly can since it sets dreadful habits. I have to admit though that it has crept into my daily vocabulary, there are times (in moments of weakness) when I have said "pwn" or "lol" and other nonsenses in daily conversations with classmates. What is even more troubling is no one seems to bat an eyelash when I do. :dizzy2:

Yeah, I 'lol' my colleagues from time to time, although they do frown at it. And my kids say 'ownt!' all the time.. :shame:

I have a tendency to forget that the T9 dictionary doesn't work when adding names in my phone's contacts list. So it's full of bizarre names really. Some of which I can't even remember who they are. A few of them however have also turned into nicknames, even when some of them were already nicknames.

Also a very wierd thing I had a couple of years ago, well back in my teenager and msn years, is that I was using certain emoticons a lot. One of them was the one sticking out his tongue. In normal speech I subconsciously started to stick out my tongue and imitate other emoticons as well. Of course sometimes I also exclaimed the usual lol and the likes.
Glad I almost never use msn now.

Even worse I like to sign texts/emails to my wife with 'Love!' which, due to the nature of the keyboard, is often rendered 'Live!' Doesn't come across quite right...
