Is it possible to add the phalanx characteristic to units with two weapons (spear and sword?)?
I wish to add them to Massilian hoplites and other hoplite units with 2 weapons. However, I do not want to turn them into a sarrissa...I just want them to form a tight classical phalanx formation like the phalanx mod made by TW Fanatic.
I am not that sure, maybe try and error the following until an experienced modder can say something more detailed:
In your EB\sp game edu backup there is a file named "export_descr_units.txt"
Make a backup.
search for "Massiliotes Hoplitai"
There is the unit, in the line "formation" there are 4 values separated with commas (not points!!), the first two should be the values for soldier spacing (in metres) side to side, then front to back for close formation. adjust these as your will. I do not know if this change is savegame compatible...
If you want to give the unit the phalanx attribute, add after "square" in the same line ", phalanx".
Actually I do not know if this could interfere with the "ligh_spear attribute".

To your first question: It is possible, look at the phalanx units in EB, they all got two weapons, one spear+sword/axe

Yes you're right- the main question is would it work with the "short spear" attribute.
So far all the phalanx and sarrissa phalanx units have either short pike or long pike attribute.
If you make a good backup, then I would just try...but inform please over the result!

I've given Iphik. Hoplitai the phalanx ability with spear as thei primary weapon and they work like the hoplites in vanilla - phalanx with shorter spears than phalangitai.

Also, phalangitai have the first 5(?) ranks fighting, Iphik 3 and Hoplitai 2.

Now my biggest challenge is to figure out whether to give units the sarrissa phalanx w/ the "phalanx attribute" or the classical phalanx with the "short pike" attribute
I'm thinking giving "short_pike" to units with two weapons might result in some bugs, but I'll experiment...
my attempt to give the "short_pike" attribute to units with two weapons have ended in failure.
I tried giving units such as the Baktrian noble hoplites the short pike attribute + spear attribute so they fight in a more cohesive formation.
Unfortunately, this makes their spear weapons look ridiculously long and basically disables their 2ndary sword weapon.
