Ptolomaioi having Elephant Cataphracts?
Hi fellow EB fans!
The unit list says, that Ptolies can recruit Elephantes Kataphraktoi Indikoi, the recruitment viewer says the contrary. What is true? I guess the DON'T have acces to those tanks.
Re: Ptolomaioi having Elephant Cataphracts?
My recruitment viewer (the one included in EB 1.1/1.2) says they do indeed have access to the elephants.
Re: Ptolomaioi having Elephant Cataphracts?
Hmmm, maybe I got to check my RV...
No they only got African Forest Elephants in Memphis.
Re: Ptolomaioi having Elephant Cataphracts?
Maybe you have to take a look at regionals in India?:juggle2:
Edit: Yep, confirmed! Come on my friend, a bit of logical thinking...:sweatdrop:

Duh... I'd never thought that those prestigious huge super tanks could be regionals.

why is that so? I mean if a faction can recruit tham as natives, why is there also a regional option?

They require a high level MIC, so this way they can be recruited under any government type.

Are they the same price?

Also with factions who historically used them but had no territory where elephants existed i.e. Seleucids and Epirotes, the game tries to represent the fact that their armies could and did include Elephants.
Therefore the Seleucids can recruit Indian Elephants in Antioch to represent the fact that they would have traded with whoever owned India in order to obtain several of these beasts. Same goes for Epirotes.
I do have one question. How were Phyrrus' elephants transported to Greece and then to Italy? Were special transport ships needed to ferry these beasts?
Re: Ptolomaioi having Elephant Cataphracts?
I'd like to know that aswell, because I read today that Alex tried to get some Elephantes on board before he came back to Babylon and didn't succeed.

Plutarch wrote flat-bottomed transports. If you have access to JSTOR, see if you can find an article on Ptolemy Philadelphus' Elephant Hunting, which has a description on the ship the Ptolemaioi designed.

Thanks a lot Krusader! Baloon for your help. :balloon2: Quite the interesting article.
Though it does mention that Ptolemais Theron was founded after the EB start date as a base from which elephant hunts would take place. Why then do the Ptolemies control that town from the start date or should that town even exist in EBII?
Also the article states that the ships required for transporting elephants were invented during Philadelphus' reign somewhere around 270 or so. This would place the invention of the ships after Phyrrus had already used Elephants in his Italian campaign. There might be no firm answer to this question but I thought I'd raise it anyway.

Do notice that the article mentions that Mediterranean & Red Sea are different when it comes to sailing, and it implies (as I read it) that the ships invented by the Ptolemaic shipwrights were specifically designed for Red Sea conditions.
