Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
I don't know how many people are forced to use Internet Explorer to visit this site, but I have to in college. As a result, I am forced the endure some of the most disgusting, repulsive and trojan-filled non-porn adverts on the internet; the teeth whitening adverts. Should anyone be crazy enough to wish to see them, then simply load up Internet Explorer, and browse around a few threads, log on, etc. It is clear to see that they are vile.
Even if they promoting legit products, I would still be complaining, due to their repugnant nature (Particularly the one with the rotten teeth). As it happens they are scams, and a quick google search will prove that, and although I doubt that any regular users of the board are stupid enough to click on "One weird old tip used by a working mum to clean her teeth" and get a bumper pack of spyware and credit card bills, they threaten the safety of other, potential users. Advertising those products is unethical.
I have no knowledge whatsoever of how your contract works with advertisers. I do not know whether it is even possible for you to petition them to remove it. What I do know is that they are certainly not enticing me to click any ad on the Org, they are forcing me to use Adblock Plus at home, and that they give the Org a bad image.

Re: Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
Maybe it is for all the British users of the site.
However, the .org needs money to run itself. It has many members and a huge fanbase. I am not sure what Tosa's hosting bill is or how much bandwidth gets used to comment, but he needs to get money from some where to pay for the site and the forum.

Tosa does not get any money from anything. The banners are how the site host compensates for the free services they give to the Org. No banners = no org. It's an unfortunate reality of free internet hosting.

Re: Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
I'm not saying that the banners should be banned, but that the specific "tooth whitening" ads should be removed from the site. Would it be possible for him to contact the service which provides the banners to get those particular ads removed?

Re: Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
The money we get from the ads gets distributed amongst the staff through a distributionkey, f.e. backroommoderators generally get a little more than entrance hall moderators, and with each year you serve you get a little bit extra.
I can't complain about my cut, so I'm glad to host whatever ads pay best. The teethcleaning one is a nice one for my wallet.

Indeed. Just a few more days and that new Mercedes will be mine :2thumbsup:

Re: Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
Just FYI: many of the various ads seen at the org are region-specific and/or user-specific. In other words, I often see different ads than an orgah sited in Belgium, or Australia, etc. will see.
I've seen the teeth-whitening ones on other websites & agree they're disturbing. But here at the org lately, I see adverts for Retirement planning, late-age re-education, vid games, and California-based banks & mortgage companies... which "tracks" with my recent web-visiting habits and interests.

The only thing I've looked at which could possibly attract those teeth adverts is, uh, "Disgusting Teeth Adverts", after they appeared.

Re: Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
And your wallet is probably three times emptier, and your computer probably has three times more porn pop-ups.

A British one. Remember in the UK, College means from ages 16-18, so it's like the top end of High School (But optional, and more intensive). I go to university next year though, so it's FF all the way from then on.

A levels is School but you wear your own clothes and kids still don't want to be there and only there because their parents forced them too.
It is only if you go into Adult Classes, you actually get into a good educational environment where people want to learn.

Unlike you, some of us are forced to ignore them manually.

Re: Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
It appears they've disappeared. If that's down to you, cheers.

Re: Awful Teeth Whitening Adverts
I get Star Trek Online, singles ads, home renovation and financial ads. Probably got the teeth one, but I never pay attention.
