Intolerance and Sacrilege
I've noticed in my Seleukid campaign that all of my frontier governors who were once quite effective are becoming disgusting defilers of the gods of my conquered peoples. They simply keep picking up intolerance then sacrilege of the gods, which is ruining them as governors. Why is that? I'm on a slow quest to conquer the world but this happening will ruin me if it hasn't already. How do I stop this horrible occurance?
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
I hate bumping topics but this is killing my campaign so I'm hoping someone will see this and know how I can stop or reduce the occurance of these traits or at least tell me whats causing them.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
I have this too in my Seleucid campaign. Intolerance is hardly a problem, but sacrilege raises unrest considerably. My guess is that good education would prevent this kind of thing from happening. I've yet to test it though...
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
Is it the client ruler or a FM?
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
For me I think having a good education causes this trait, as I get it more often with those I let sit in the capital.
That, or it may be the Temple of Atargatis. I spam that temple and only use the law providing Marduk one for landlocked faraway provinces.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
intolerance is why I have my best general.
he's a regular Richard Dawkins*. I don't need him telling my people "your gods are stupid/they don't exist" and causing a riot, so I sent him off with an army towards Carthage.
*yes, he's even an Atheist.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
It may well be the education. I leave my family members in my capital with a fully upgraded academy from age 16 to at least 24 unless they show very early promise and are made generals of one of my armies. It is these poindexters that I tend to send out to govern the frontiers since they build up nice management and generally at least grab some nice influence ancillaries. Maybe I should try retiring one of my great yet uneducated generals in a frontier city and see if he becomes a defiler of the gods.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
I just took a look at the traits file, out of curiosity. There is a slight chance (1%) that any Seleukid character may become intolerant, and somewhat greater chance (3%) if they are Dull or Selfish. The chance values for these traits are already pretty much as low as they can be. Still, that means any given Dull, Selfish character has maybe a 7% of becoming intolerant. Once one is intolerant, however, there is an 80% chance of them committing sacrilege if they are in any city with a large temple, regardless of what god it's to. If there is no large temple, they won't commit sacrilege.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
Yep, that als oa very common trait among my seleukid dynasty. But I don't see why a good education should be the cause. You can be a non-believer without beeing an enemy of the gods' worshippers...
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
What ethnicity are they? Don't forget that the Seleucid Empire was a huge multicultural society, including Babylonians, Assyrians, Jews, Persians, Medians, Cappadocians, then there were of course the new Macedonians and Greeks.
And intolerance wasn't all that uncommon in that time, even if we forget the superiority the Greeks felt over other cultures.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
I will check but I think they are from all ethnicities
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
Well, Epimetheus said it all, really.
Since he has invested his time to search edct for you, you might want to listen to him.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
Those traits are not supposed to be common or even uncommon. They are supposed to be rare.
While there was intolerance, it was not religious or at least not widespread as in medieval times.
The Sacrilege of Gods is supposed to be a nasty one and its based on Antiochos III's demise as an angry mob killed him when he seized the treasury of a temple in Elymais. To try and rob a temple of treasuries was a big no-no in Hellenistic times.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
When somebody who's not part of a particular religion looks at it, they usually think that some, if not all of it, is absurd, and this leads to intolerance.
This wasn't as true among the ancient polytheists, who shared many ritualistic customs in common even if they worshipped different gods, and often gods from completely different cultures would be adopted (for example, the Ptolemaic Greeks quickly began worshipping Isis) or even fused into a single identity (like the Hellenization of many Eastern deities).
These ancient polytheists were significantly more tolerant than the dominant Abrahamic faiths we have today. While the largely polytheistic ancient cultures (with the exception of Rome, Babylon, and some Seleukid kings) tolerated Jews and even Christians (a particularly good example is pre-Islamic Arabia; there are even records of a Jewish king in ancient Yemen), once the Christians and Muslims were in power, they usually took measures to discourage or even eliminate polytheism and other rival faiths (particularly in medieval Europe).
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
a bit absurd really, because don't the abrahamic faiths technically worship the same entity? y genocide thy fellows just because they have different food customs and rituals?

That, mixed with being uneducated 'rednecks' that want to kill everything that's not like them, and thus 'strange'.
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
Wasn't he brought to death during the Jewish rebellion?
EDIT: No, wait, that was Antiochos IV Epiphanes.

Let's not get into religion bashing here.
:focus:
Re: Intolerance and Sacrilege
AFAIK Redneckism is not a religion, but it does occur in all religions as well as atheism, I'm christian myself, and thus have no grudge against religion. But the crusades and jihads came from uneducated, 'zealous' redneckism.
Wake up extremist, something that is not like yourself is not evil!
(That was my message actually)
