My bru and I call it glorified larping. No offense to anyone who does those reenactments. It'd probably be cool. That picture is great.
Edited to add, it does not get any uncooler than that.
The one in Shetland is not actually reenacting, it is what we Danes refer to as local theater/theatrics.
What I do is martial arts with Viking weapons, the theatrics fellows can hardly distinguish one end of a sword from another, while we train 3- 16 hours a week year-round. My sword and spear are as familiar to me as my keyboard... we are required to wear handwoven, handsewn, plant-dyed clothes, etc...
Then in summer we travel round living as Vikings at markets/festivals and show what we can do, let the audiences very close in, tasting food, trying gear, seeing us fight... I am n a hurry, so no time for details, but there is a vast difference between that blown-up fellow and articificial theatrics and us I am sorry to say. We are required to wear handwoven, handsewn, plant-dyed clothes, etc... I bet you that fellow own none. His gear is as inauthentic as it can get. I agree, glorified larping, winged helmets... come on...
/me sighs and thinks that these fools should get some real reenactors there, preferably fighters like me. But of course, if authenticity is not what they want...
/me sighs again...
Try searching Youitube for "Moesgaard"
Thanks for the tip anyway, the intension was good.
Ι was really tempted to join these guys at some point ... however their closest training cell is about 150 klm from where i live so  ... still i'ld love to give it a try sometime...
@Macirille: Well its another kind of activity. Comparing what you do to what they do would be like comparing a well researches documentation with 300.
ARMA are good for martial arts and much thinking on how best to employ weapons.
Them I like.
You hit the nail on the head there, Up Helly Aa is a festival not a historical reenactment by any strech of the imagination. I wouldn't be so disparaging about them though, it's all done with a sense humor and they don't claim to be historically accurate. Besides it wasn't like the Vikings didn't have a taste for the theatrics either:clown:
@the OP if you liked the Up Helly Aa pics you should take a look at the Beltane fire festival too (I was going to post a link but given that some people tend to get a bit naked at the thing it would probably be breaking forum rules, just google it). It's a big festival (10000+) that happens in Edinburgh every year based around the old celtic festival, it's probably about as historically accurate as Up Helly Aa but the intention behind it is a bit more serious.
In my opinion they are both just excellent excuses to get drunk.
Celtic re-enactment:
Les Ambiani, re-enactment of the first century BC. 5 archaeologists in the group.

Les Leuki, re-enactment of the fourth and third century BC. Franck Mathieu is the director, he works for several museums.

Roman:
Pax Augusta, re-enactment of the Ve Legion from 52 BC to AD 92. The director is François Gilbert, author of several books.

Bobbin, youn think we do not get drunk at Viking Markets? viking Markets are like Valhal mate, we fight all day and drink and/or ravish/seduce women all night.
Melee is more fun Ibrahim, nothing like slicing your enemy with a sword or poking him with a spear. Knowing that he would be dead or seriously injured were it a sharp. More adrenaline rush to it as there is increatsed danger of injury as well :-D
maybe, but as I prefer playing with powder, bucause I am a crazy ****. :clown:
besides, I grew up on watching movies/reenactments round some isolated fort in the middle of the american wilderness, from the french and indian war era. its why I make plates @ www.kronoskaf.com ; It has a feeling of nostalgia to when I was a kid I guess  and I do want to join one of those reenactments from the era-when and if I get a well paying job. bright red coats don't come cheap.
say, are there any reenactments of Sarecens? maybe you can get me join is such exists.
Not as far as I know, but in England there is Norman who is a from the Caribbean and black as night, and Quanon who is a Pakistani. Both are very nice fellows, and both wear Saracen clothes to re-enact traders visiting the north for fair slaves and fighting.
