I think a neat addition (and I know this has been discussed) is a classic samurai sword unit to the game, two-sword style fighting. (Which would increase defense as two sword samurai fighting uses the shorter sword to parry with). This unit should go head to head with monks and beat them in an all-factors-even battle, beat yari and archer foot samurai in hand to hand, but be more susceptible to cavalry charges (even from front). Making this unit an equal for monks and able to beat yari might seem to make the game "unbalanced" but making them weaker to cavalry attacks would increase the importance of hand to hand cavalry units in multiplayer, which right now seems nil to marginal. Maybe even to make a better balance between monks and no-dachi, make it so the monks can't beat this unit, but the no-dachi can because of their longer and heavier swords.
I think this would actually add more balance in the big picture as well as increase the importance of two units (definitely cavalry and to a lesser degree nodachi) which are of diminished importance (depending on game koku) in multiplayer.
What do you guys think?

Why not. While Musashi actually lived after the period STW covers, and such an unit would be radically ahistorical, it would fill a niche. What I would rather have is the monks being more suspectible to cavalry, though.

Well, in SP the Dutch arrive in 1600, Miyamoto Musashi himself fought in the Battle of Sekigahara for the western army, so he wasn't way out of time frame for the game. In SP mode you could make it one of the later units you get, or maybe have it early and then it improves with the "Miyamoto Musashi Swordsman" event. hehe

i think you have to remember that in talking about adding new units yer now in the realm of 'expansion pack' and we can no longer just 'balance the game' against what we currently have. we also have to balance with what's coming. and also bearing in mind the paper, rock, scissors nature of the game, you'll have more to consider with the coming expansion pack.
it would seem to me that someone wielding 2 swords would be more susceptible to missle fire, be it guns or arrows, but i dont really know the historical reality of this.

Well since expansion ships so soon I'm sure no change this big would get included anyway, just all theoretical. I guess I meant better defense in hand to hand, but I think Shogun doesn't take the difference into account too much. It would be interesting if they added an AOE 2 style difference between armor and pierce armor (defense against missles).

This unit already exists! All Samurai carry Katana and Wakazashi. Archers, Yari, Cav, all of them.

Good idea. In reality, Miyamoto Musashi who uses 2 swords (1 long 1 short) quite often and he has also beat a worrior monk in a 1v1 fight using that tactic.

Hehe
A good mounted pig-sticker or sling blade will have the monks talking to Buddha in no time...

I want peasants with home made armor and weapons...if you really want historical accuracy...eheheheh....
