The king is dead... long live the king?

I've read about how the starter of the Roman MOD for MTW has abandoned his plans and I thought that this is really baaad news. I find his plans for a shogun 2 mod quite interesting, but - frankly - what bothers me is the Roman MOD.

So... is there any work done? Has anyone started to work on it? Does anyone want to work on it?

If there is an effort going on, I am willing to help (no graphics and stuff, but I can write some of the things that need to be written and I also have adequate resources on the period). If not... can we start something here?

[B]Lord Krazy is working on Roman Units as we speak. He told me it would take him a couple weeks and then we can enjoy his creations. I have a great interest a Patrician Early Roman Mod as well and I am gathering information now in order to begin with that project. Not a total conversion but extensive. The Pope could be converted to a Patrician type of government but I think I will just get rid of the faction for the mod. The English faction is my prime candidate for the Roman army since they have scarlet a scarlet color I like. I am not very good at unit creation however but I am taking a stab at it. I am gona see if LK can give me some tips altho I have an idea of how he does it. I need Unit Icons for Roman Infantry, Calvary and Archers. That is the simple part. The hard part is using base units and dressing them up a bit to look like Roman Infantry. We can do away with some of the agents and Replace some of the buildings. I have a Forum, Temple and a colisium so far but havent goten down to converting it yet. Epic.Bif will also need to get touched up. Names, Changes and events will need to be changed. There will be no knights the campaign map can be touched up (Thats easy) allot of work but I realy want this Mod. all of us wargamers love the Romans. Hope we can get our heads together on this. Anything is possible with desire and creativity.

I have plenty of stuff on it lying around, just tell me if you want any of it and if I can help in anyway.

By the way to thoise out of the know, I am the guy who had to give up the Rome MOD, simply because I had way too much work to do on my own, even though LK was making units.

I know how it is. I want to start with the basics. First project: Roman Infantry
This does not have to be fancy or complicated to do. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. Ok here it goes.
Textures\Men\MSHelm folder has all I need for Roman Infantry. This is what I would like to try:
ChilvaricSergeant_S I would like to replace his shield with a large shield like the paravise or one of the other large shields. This unit will use Large Shield, Javelin and sword. It will use all to melee. Eventualy it will be exclisively only for English faction as they will be the Early Roman units in the Patrician mod. I need help with the units if anything. Just keep it simple that way it does not crash the game. That is my policy. It can be done. But I wanted to start somewere and the whole mod will be built around the Unit first then all the other stuff should not be too bad. We will need buildings for the Romans I have about three that need to be converted to the game image file. Also If Lord Krazy reads this, I wanted to have them stab rather than slash or overhand they will throw their javelins and then brake out with their gladius (Short Pointy sword) and stab.

OK guys we all want a roman mod at some stage.
the work load for a total overhaul is huge.
It will need many people to complete.
I'm sure we will be still working on it

Now if 10 different people make their own
roman mod I think this would be a shame
as this will lead to much work being duplicated.
LBA and I have many things started but not much
finished.Others have helped on this project
with research and points of view.
What we need now are more people that are willing
to do the practical side.

This bif can't be used for throwing
a javelin.
This is a perfect example of people researching
the same thing.

these are the only bifs with javelin throwing
animations.

neginf.bif is the only one with the stabbing action
and a walk suitable for the Romans

the others have the stabbing action
their arms move when they walk
not very Roman.

If you want to know about this stuff all you have to do is ask.I was researching this before nag decided to

[B]Ok Senor Loco. I just created my first unit Icon of A Legionari with an intricate shield and jav. Looks pretty good. As far as animations and all that, I have an idea of what you are talking about, and I am trying to get them to work just so i could learn the craft. Sorry about the misquote. Just for your information,
despite the problems with elephants (LK ?), I m still working on a Diadochoi campaign. (starting 320 BC)
I have only worked on the campaign map not the units.
Checking all the names is a real pain...
Of course some Roman troops will be involved (as a minor faction in the early period http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif ), in the late period I would like to prove that these petty legions could have been smashed by the Macedonians or the mighty Seleucids or the treacherous Lagids. (Actually the Hellenistic collapse is due to political and social matters, military failures are just a consequence).
I would like to portray all the vicious bickering between the Successors, various Gallic and Thracian barbarians, Greek city states and the Parthians (in the end)taking part.
Regarding the Roman mod, I could share some info about the Eastern Med and the local dynasties.

I wouldn't object to re-starting the MOd, but that will not happen on my part unless people help me with the stuff I would have done, I do thank everyone for the info they sent me and I continue to thank Lord Krazy for his supreme willingness to help and I hope he is still willing to work with me on my other MOD.

As for the MOD, if you want my help you'll have to realise I'll want it to go in the direction I originally planned rather than starting ALL OVER AGAIN.

1 What is it you are trying to acomplish with a roman mod and what have you done so far?
2 Give us an Idea of what the objective of this mod is.
I was not aware that anyone but LK was working on this.
3 What remains to be done ?
4 is this a total conversion (Yikes) or just adding units?
We just need information so we can help if possible. There is a great deal of interest here for The Roman additions but it is not clear what you want to do with them.

1-A MOD that was fun, lots of preliminary work was done

2-The objective is to create a new game out of MTW

3-Alot remains to be done

4-A total conversion with units

On the practical side, then?

We could set up a little group here to start working on this. I don't have much time but writing is my thing (and history my hobby) so I could contribute some stuff. But there has to be someone in charge, to put this whole thing into perspective.

You have the heart of a knight. I agree with you as far as someone taking the lead in this project. There would be plenty of writing for you to do (Or Cut and Paste) The Names, changes, description files would be a good place to start. Events file is realy good for giving the thing a Roman edge to the mod. Since the Units would play such an important role in this, I am waiting to see what LK has up his sleeve. I have already created A very nice unit icon of Legionary (Roman Legion) Infantry. Archers, Cav and Auxiliary is my next step. The Epic.Bif file would also play a big role as well as buildings. I Was asking the gentleman who started this thread what he has in mind but it just seems kind of vague. I am interested in starting the Lightning Bolt Legion Legio XII Fulminata for this project. In the Real Roman Era Legions were started by men of influence and they made a name for themselves by the exploits of battle taking on the name of the province taken. I have a nice idea for this concept of game play in MTW if anyone is interested.

Anyways, I am doing some thinking as to what the appropriate time frame for this MOD should be and also what kind of factions we'll have to include... ok, let's put it in a more practical way:

We need organisation in this project and I volunteer to take charge if anyone does not mind. I am good at getting people to work together and I have a general idea of what direction we can take in this project. My sole purpose would be to get folks to colaborate. I also recognise who is gifted in sertain areas. We can submit the finished product to Barocca for the finishing touches. What say ye ? Once we pick a leader we can exchange emails and begin work or rather finish what has already been started.

Very well then. I will keep out of this unless you need help. I only wanted to put everyones ideas together with some sort of organisation. I personaly am not interested in the colapse of the Roman empire. I wish to bring the Romans back and let the player decide what course the Empire takes.
Its no fun playing as a looser i guess.

Ok, Ive been tinkering with the Spearmen unit and have turned it into a javelin throwing sword using unit with large shield. I dont understand the actionspage folder very well tho and on the field the javelins are being thrown but the unit seems to be still. I suspect its an actionspage thing. The formation looks great, typical century formation of 13 rows looks realy good. Just not happy with how they fight. altho they kick butt as jav hurlers.
