Greek general's bodyguard has an upkeep cost.
As the thead title says, the Greek bodyguards have an upkeep cost in addition to the usual 200 per turn family member wage. Other factional bodyguards dont have any upkeep. I think this is because they are set up as having Spartan hoplites as their bodyguard which are a regular unit with 774 upkeep per turn, rather than using a general's bodyguard unit which dont have any upkeep.

yeah, btw, spartan is among the best fighters you can have.... to minimize the risk of paying the wages, Akrotatos and his uncle should lead the assault on Korinthos as fast as possible, and Areus must kill everyone in Krete.... (don't worry, they'll be auto-regenerated)

I just noticed that if the player starts a game as the Greeks they will have spartans for bodyguards, but if you arnet playing as the greeks they will have regular greek bodyguards with 0 upkeep.

It's not a bug. The starting Spartan characters get a Spartan bodyguard; all others (this includes Spartans coming of age after the game's start) get the Epilektoi. The EB team did not want to include another unit (and model!) for a few starting Spartan generals.
