I think I tried the demo but I didn't like it (I don't remember specifics other than I gave up on it pretty quickly). Can't hurt for you to look that up.
From the little I've read of it, it's mostly a trading game. You'll fight a few battles at sea, but that's not the core of the game. I think the expansions added more fighting to the game. Also patch up if the copy D2D has isn't the latest, I've read the game is very buggy as well.
I've heard it lacks depth.
