A Question to the Canadians
What is your opinion on the US and Americans in general? Today, a non-Canadian claimed that Canadians have an animosity towards Americans. Considering that she is non-Canadian, I wanted to get authentic opinions from real Canadians.
One thing is for certain, the world loves Canadians.

Re: A Question to the Canadians
Where is Canada? A big northern province of the United States? :clown:

Re: A Question to the Canadians
Why do Americans think they can call themselves Americans?

I think you mean "Why do those from the United States think they are the Americans, while Canadians, Mexicans, and others are not addressed as such even though they are on the American continent?"

Re: A Question to the Canadians
We're also the only country with "America" in our title. There is an Estados Unidos de Mexico pero no hay un otra paĆs con el palabra "America."
Sheesh! What's so hard to understand?

Jesting aside:
"Why do those from the United States think they are the Americans while there have already been real Americans living here for the past countless millenia?"

Why do people born in the 20th/21st centuries think they are humans when there have already been real humans living on earth for millions of years?

Re: A Question to the Canadians
Because the pre-Columbian natives hadn't the faintest clue of their living on two continents separate from the rest of the world, never mind naming them, least of all with the European name America.
Why do native Americans call themselves Americans?

Re: A Question to the Canadians
I'm not Canadian but my gf is and she hates the US and americans with a passion. I've stopped arguing with her on that topic since it always ends with the two of us being pissed off*. Despite living in a country that is virtually in all ways similar to the US, despite watching US TV and shows, despite reading american books, despite eating crappy american food, she hates them all.
I'm certainly not qualified enough to speak in general, but my overall feeling after studying 8 months in a Canadian university is that this hatred toward americans and the US was/is widely shared among students.
*And I'm french, which should rank me quite high on the "I 'ate ze americanz" issue.

Personally I have virtually no problem with anyone from the US, but I wouldn't necessarily want to live there myself. I'd say that love and hate aside, you guys are about the best neighbours there are. I have no doubt that if anything ever happened disaster-wise that you would be up here in a shot to offer all the help you could muster. You're not necessarily liked, but rest assured you are appreciated and for the most part respected. You are very good hearted people.
Just after 9/11 there was a lot of goodwill in the air, but I'd say the overall attitude towards your government here has defintely soured since the invasion(s).
The only Americans I can say I don't like are the ones who wear Canadian flags on their backpacks when they travel abroad. Please don't do that, or if you do, please don't act like idiots.

The theme that the general hatred towards the US helps keep the population of vastly different and divided Canadians together in a single state is something I always encounter when this subject is brought up. Anyways, now that you said this, I like your gf a bit more.

You wrote a very fine and polite post, Kurando. A good veil to cover your underlying hatred. :clown:

You've nailed it. We're so similar in language and culture that many Canadians have to hate the U.S. to maintain their identity. They're proud of their country, history, and likely hate us in the way that only true friends can.

Because they're Siberians, but "American" is easier to spell?

On topic: I lived in Ontario 1970-71 (Dad was from Kinkora, outside Stratford) and my Canadian pals said: "You're OK, but the rest of Yanks suck!".

Heh. My new found friends (they rescued me off the highway when my motorcycle broke down) decided to test the stereotype, and I lived up to the Yank rep: puked my guts out on Molson Canadian the first time (mind you, I was 19, underage in the US, and had only had stolen beers from Dad before). I soon found my beer-legs though, after a week or so. Not that I had much beer money - I got odd jobs under the table for that year+ . About once a month one of the fellas (of about 12 of them) would score a good paycheck and treat the others to a couple of cases. I did so once, after getting a hefty check from two weeks cutting survey lines (light lumberjacking) up around Sudbury.
Good times. *sigh*

I remember you said once about knowing people claiming to have supported the IRA, those people are murderers of innocent families and children.
As for Scotland, only the SNP fueled by Mel Gibsons Braveheart actually want Scottish Independence. The Scottish are generally happy otherwise, as opposed to being some discriminated minority, they play a big part in British policies. Gordon Brown, our current Prime-Minister is Scottish.

Re: A Question to the Canadians
yeah and most Native Americans don't really wish to return to the days of their forefathers.
It wasn't anything i actually feel about just saying i could complain all i wanted to about my oppressed heritage if i wanted to even though im the evil white invader. so calm down you touchy damn brit
and i said in that statement i think it shows true ignorance and a perfect example of america's romanicism of the old country regarding the ira.
or i might have been talking about my dads friends, a hedge fund manager (read: rich, wealthy stereotypical bostoner), in Boston suburbs where it was like driving into the ira headquarters with all the damn irish flags flying everywhere.

I was just doing a friendly warning, if you ever came across a bunch of people from Northern Ireland for example. I would hate to see anything happen to you.

Re: A Question to the Canadians
This thread has left the shores of Canada for ever, it seems. Wherever it is headed, it is not to a good place.
