Heard about it earlier today, and I've spent the rest of the day/night drinking and listening to his music. The guy wrote some absurd lyrics, but he was really goddamn good at what he did. Just take a listen:

Elf,
with Rainbow,
with Black Sabbath,
and solo.

And he was still making music up until he died -- and it was GOOD. It's one thing when a former musical hero who hasn't produced anything in years dies, or when they're obviously washed up, but this a genuine loss to music. RIP. One of the greatest metal artists ever.
