After installation of vanilla Rome Total War White Label addition or Original the message
'cannot access C:/program files/the creative assembly/rome-total war/rometw.exe'
appears. This is the umpteenth time I have installed the game so I cannot understand why it isn't working. The game has been modified before but all files have been deleted. The only thought I have is that the installation key is not requested during installation.

I use Vista. It has never had a problem with it before.

Yup. Only account on the pc.
You can try to things:
1. Right click on the .exe and choose "Run as Administrator" and confirm your choice on following screen.
2. Turn off the UAC and run the .exe by left clicking it twice (it's not recommended because of security reasons).
3. If both doesn't work, then you need to reinstall the game, but put it outside the Program Files. Actually, it's poor choice to install games there, because UAC monitors changes in crucial directories and makes problems when you want to run the game.
Right, I've tried the 'Run as Administrator' and have no idea what a UAC is. I'll try put it outside Program Files and see if it works. Thanks for the help.
"UAC" is abbreviation for "User Account Control" and it's a feature of Windows Vista. It gives you higher level of security and forces you to think twice before you make something potentially hazardous for you operating system.
When UAC is enabled it monitors your actions and warns you a lot when you fiddle with Program Files and Windows directories.

I've tried using both discs of Rome that I have. I have also 'explored' the disk and then ran the setup exe. as administrator. I have also done it the normal way through the demo shield. I have deleted all files that had anything to do with Rome before installation. I have always applied it to program files before though, so this is something new that I am trying. The message says I may not have the permission to run it which is what leads me to think that it is something to do with the installation not asking for the key.
After installing outside Program Files the same message 'Windows cannot access the specified devise, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item' comes up.
Okay, install it outside Program Files. It would be best to try other partition, but if you don't have, it's enough to put the game just in the "C:\RTW" or something...

Yes, but you need to launch the installer by right-clicking on it and choosing "Run as Administrator". This is important.
I installed it to the D: drive, installed through administrator and attempted to run through administrator and the same message appeared.
Hmm, strange, but there's one more option for you to try.
First, read the How to take Ownership of a File in Windows Vista guide and follow instructions. It's short and comprehensive. It should give you full ownership of the folder where the game is installed.
