Where to install Rome Total War before Installing EB
Hello everybody, I am brand new to this forum and forums in general, but i have been an avid EB player for a few years now. I have searched up and down the technical help section and cannot find a good thread to respond to, so I decided to make my own. I have now installed and reinstalled EB several times now, all because each installation would eventually succumb to CTDs. I followed the install guide to the letter, including installing 1.2 patches, but my technical knowledge is limited and i may have misunderstood something. I'm about to reinstall vanilla RTW, but i remembered the install wizard saying it was not reccomended to install it to the "program files" folder. If not there, where would be a good place to install it so EB can run smoothly? (I do not know if that was the source of the issue, but i'm trying to eliminate all variables before I start asking for more help. Sorry for cluttering the forum with a new thread; if someone knows a good thread to respond to my situation, please redirect me). Thanks for the help, guys.
Re: Where to install Rome Total War before Installing EB
you should try to install all your games in different partition of the Hard Disk, my laptop (for example) has drive D:\ solely devoted for all my games that I often play (although a installation of RTW is on drive E:\ for modding purpose)

?
I just make it simple
c:\games\CleanRTW15
c:\games\EB
c:\games\EB-MP
P.S. As far as I can tell, CTDs are an inherent problem with Rome: Total War in general. Not campaign-ending, unrecoverable CTDs... I only had that problem once before I moved to Alex.exe, and a five-game-year old save solved even that one. But all versions of RTW I've played (including vanilla) have had a problem with sometimes crashing when doing certain actions (especially at the end of a battle, particularly annoying), but its always fixed by just restarting the computer and playing again. My guess is that the RTW engine has a memory leak problem that makes it more unstable the longer you play it in a single session.
For this reason I just make sure auto-save is turned on, and save before the beginning of every battle. If the auto-save becomes corrupt (only had the problem once), I just go back to factionBAT or whatever my battle save is.

There is in fact a memory leak problem with R:TW, although the 1.5 patch solved most of that. Not sure if it is responsible for the CTD's though.
Anyway, I am moving this thread to the technical help forum.
Re: Where to install Rome Total War before Installing EB
I have windows vista, but no partitions, so I did it like this: I made a folder named 'games' in the 'my documents' folder, and installed RTW there. After that, I installed EB into My documents/games/EuropaBarbarorum1.2 (I renamed it from Activision or The Creative Assembly or whatever)/Rome - Total War/
This way I avoid all the 'program files' problems that some people seem to have, and besides there are no hidden folders (like 'saves'). A third positive thing is that I can install any minimod there, but these are actually all advantages over not installing it to program files.
Anyway that's how I did it. Hope you'll manage to do something similar.

Yeah, I'm using 1.5 vanilla, and for the most part i have been able to revert back to old saves and just get around the CTD's. But now it has gotten to the point where almost every other end turn or return to the campaign map after a battle yields one. I'm going to try Misterfred's strategy and see if i can install vanilla somewhere not labeled "program files", but thanks for moving the post, Ludens.

Cute Wolf, I had thought of that, but unfortunately I either cannot find any other drive to install RTW into save C:, or no other drive exists that will work. Unless anyone would be willing to instruct me on how to do that, I'm pretty limited to the C: folder. But thanks anyway for the suggestions. They are helping.

C:\Games doesn't work for you? Also check the hints given in the Frequent Encountered Issues about crashes: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=103681
Waiting after a battle for 10-15 seconds minimizes the chance to get an after-battle-CTD due to the RTW memory leak.

Re: Where to install Rome Total War before Installing EB
C:/Games did work out, and everything ran smoothly for a while but after several (in game) years of CTD-free play, crashes started happening again. This is probably something i'm going to have to post my save with, but just for ducks i'm wondering if i'm missing anything. I did install EB1.2, and the fixes, and I wait 10-15 seconds after the battle report comes up, and i do not save right before battles. The CTD's occured at first right after big battles and such, then after i ended the turn, then once in the middle of the turn. Each time i just loaded a previous save and continued, but they are getting more frequent and it makes it difficult to play.
