For the very first time. The King of Swissland and commander of the 8th Swissland brigade drove about 150 feet to the local school parking lot. Good lord help me. :laugh4::laugh4:

Congrats on your automotive piloting. Some tips from a fellow road menace:
- If possible, learn to drive a manual transmission first. Yes, it's more difficult at first, but it will give you a better feel for the vehicle mechanics, and switching to an automatic is easier than the reverse.
- Turn off your cell phone.
- Once you feel pretty comfortable with your skills, find a wide open parking area (school, church, etc). Make sure there are no light posts. Go out on a rainy/snowy day and spend some time skidding around. It will teach you how the car will react in these conditions (plus it's fun). Put some cones out to give this reasoning weight if a cop drives by while you are doing doughnuts.

When you get to your driver's test, they may do this to you: ask you to roll down a window. Dont do it before you pull over. They are trying to fail you for not having both hands on the wheel. I almost failed because of that. :sweatdrop:
Sometimes cars of the young drivers tend to fall in love with trees or try to kiss and have a sexual intercourse with other cars. For any reason, this is never a desired consequence of driving a car.

Really? I did it the other way around and passed the manual with only one minor. Automatics are very easy to drive, so you learn quickly. Once you're used to the roads and your judgement is honed, learning how to use a gear stick isn't a big deal.Quote:

+1. I didn't have to take a driving test, I was one of two people out of a driver's ed class of 50 to get a waiver for that. My new car is a stick, and I absolutely love it. Wife can't drive stickshifts either. :DQuote:

Maybe it's a woman thing, my sister learned on an automatic and still can't drive stick after all these years. Stick shifts rule, especially on mountain roads. If the wife can't drive stick, you don't have to worry about her taking your car. :yes:Quote:

Let me tell you a true story.
Back when I was a wee boy, only 15 and a half with my drivers permit, I loved driving. I went out as often as I could. But here in Atlanta its almost always dry so I never had the experience of driving in bad weather (not including rain). Well, one cold December morning, I went out driving with my dad. It was about 11:30am.
I was feeling very confident, and didnt think much of the ice warnings. After all, this was Atlanta!
Well, I took a turn way too fast and just my luck, there was a patch of black ice right there.
I skidded and almost collided head on with an SUV in another lane.
Thank G-d I was able to steer out of the way, but it was very, very close. Both me, my dad, and the SUV driver were both pale, we were so scared.
That experience traumatized me. I didnt go behind the wheel for a whole year. I finally did get my license a year and a half later, but it took a lot of courage for me to go back.
So just reminding you, you never are as good of a driver as you think you are.

Make sure your parents have added you as a driver on their insurance policy. A friend at work didn't do that for his highschool age son because he didn't want to pay the increased premium, around $1300/year. Now his son is 21, in college, and trying to get car insurance on his own. He's considered by the insurance companies as a *new driver*, the cost $6000/year. You can pay me now or you can opt for the pay me later plan.
If you are taking some lessons with a professional driving instructor, before your last lesson make sure you ask the instructor for a certificate, which will lower your insurance cost. I took four lessons in total, about six hours, and that got me a certificate that lowered my insurance cost substantially.
Also, when you schedule your road test schedule it for the morning. If you schedule it for the afternoon the examiner gets cranky.
When I was young, a state trooper rated my driving skill in order to see if I was entiteld to a drivers license or not. A majority of the time he didn't even seem to be paying attention. For example, when you give the hand signs; left, right, stop, he was in the passenger seat and looking down at his form. The only thing he seemed to pay attention to was as I was driving back to the RMV, the road wen't from one lane into two. Left lane was take a left only and the right was forward. My driver ed instructor said to be aware of this for if you wen't straignt in the left lane, you would fail, despite the rest of the road test. Funny thing it was. The Statie probably didn't like having the job of giving lame-o (:P) kids road tests. He looked so glum! Be sure to ask your driving instructor for tips on the road test other than how to drive ones. The information might come in useful. It did for my driving test anyway.
