New Player as England - Can't Build Anything in York - Why?
Hi all,
Late to the party with MTW2, but am playing my first campaign as England. I've taken York and another province, but I can't build anything in York, even with a governor and sufficient population. Other provinces are fine.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Did you build a pallisade yet? Perhaps the city needs an upgrade before other structures can be build? The build tree works that way. As the population grows, you upgrade and can build more structures. If I recall correctly, York is tiny at the beginning of the English campaign and you can't do much with it anyway. Hope this helps! :)

my good buddy said it right...other than that...
ENGLAND ROCKS!

England is ok, but once you play as one of the factions that get Pavise-style crossbowmen, its tough to go back to any bow+arrow unit, even if they are badass like the retinue longbowmen like the English get. The Armor piercing bonus that crossbows have over longbows is insane.

Thanks guys, apologies for the delay but was away for the weekend.
I don't have the option/ability to build a palisade, only to convert to a Mott/Bailey. This with population of 776 or so. Per the docs, should only need 400 to convert to a town by building the Palisade. This with V1.02. Kinda confused.
Thanks!

I have never had that problem. I could build the pallisade as soon as I conqured the city. Perhaps you should start a new campaign, seeing as you have only begun the one you are playing, and take the city again and see if the build pallisade option is available? Did you occupy the city, or one of the other options? It would be ashame if your game was bugged, York makes decent money when teched up. You could also try to take the city as Scotland as well. Or, the roundabout way, convert to a mott/Bailey, then back to a city? Those crazy Yorksters wouldn't know what the heck was going on! Otherwise, I can provide no assistance.

Longbows also have AP. And they trounce any and all crossbow units. They also have stakes and flaming arrows and longer range. Not sure why you would be drooling so hard over the crossbows.

Probably because he means Genoese Crossbowmen. If thats the case he has every right to "drool so hard" over crossbows.
Re: New Player as England - Can't Build Anything in York - Why?
Hmm I don't have a way of testing this atm but I'm pretty sure Retinue Longbowmen are better then Genoese Crossbowmen even when one does not take the stakes in to account.

Even normal Pavise Crossbowmen I find better. I've got into missile duke-outs with archer style units (yes even longbows and byzantine guard archers) and even though I haven't done scientific testing, I just "feel" like a the crossbows do better. In the game that is. In real life Longbows were far superior.

I must admit I do prefer Longbowmen to Genoese Crossbowmen. BUT, my point is, Genoese Crossbowmen have still left me drooling over the power they can have in battle. Still an awesome unit.

The Italian factions rule early on because their piles of gold soon turn in to piles of very good spear militia and crossbow militia units. Later on though the other factions will field better units. All the "shield crossbows" with those pavises on their backs are decent vs other archers as they turn their backs towards the enemy when they reload. I have not used them vs the Mongols however, but I have a feeling that on VH/VH (that's what i play on) they will still lose simply because the damn Mongol stacks are so upgraded.

Hmmm. The Genoese Crossbowmen are far better than standard italian milita pavise's though...
Have you ever played as Milan?. If they are put infront of the oncoming enemy they will literally fall like flies up against these guys, plus they can also hold their own in melee. Just from my experiences though of course.
Re: New Player as England - Can't Build Anything in York - Why?
Yes, Genoese Xbows are the best single crossbow unit in the game. Sure, longbows eventually trounce them, but since Milan can build these guys after a few turns (not to mention that they have city and castle flavors, with the castle version being slightly better than the militia version).
As to the OP, York is still too small to be a town, I think.
Re: New Player as England - Can't Build Anything in York - Why?
I could go army for army with stacks full of Pavise Crossbow Militia, but stacking them in a certain way so that the Xbows fire directly instead of the parabolic high-arcing shot. Sure I ended up losing a few to lancer charges but the direct crossbow shots usually slow them down, too.
