Haha, the melodramatic trailer is very awesome. Don't mean to be a buzzkill, but I don't get the appeal.
You get to make your own :laugh4:
I enjoy the sandbox world and just the way everything reacts to everything else and its a interesting, unique concept without all the flashy graphics that most games depend on to sell
I thought it looked stupid until I saw Seananners's videos on Youtube and I kinda fell in love with it, I've already pulled 2 all-nighters trying to get more mining in :laugh4:
Its of no attraction for me, but the guy who built a functioning ALU...well, I just don't see how that works in game (having not played it and not knowing what its capable of)
that guy was insane :laugh4: I have no idea how he got it to work either
Right now, the game is kinda like Oblivion. It has a super mega WOW factor for about 5-10 hours, and you'll get a huge kick out of it. But then it wears off quickly. Keep in mind the game is alpha stage, but eventually it is supposed to allow user created content and heavy modding. My biggest beef right now is there isn't any real "high level" mining gear that lets me mine a lot of blocks quickly. The Halloween update coming at the end of the month is supposed to have some pretty big new features in it, but it's a month away at this point, and it appears that it's basically precluded Friday Updates for now. Notch is having a hell of a time getting his new business started, and it's taking it's toll on his ability to write code for the game.
Soo.... updates are slow for the time being. I'd say it's worth the money though, the end result is supposed to be 20 euro, right now it's half as much and reasonably good fun.
I was wondering when someone would make a post on this. A buddy of mine and myself are admin-ing a server in its beta stages, figuring what we can do. When I get the green light for it, I'll post the ip on here.
Here is a quick SS of some of the stuff we have been working on in the server
Great Dwarf that leads to the entrance to Dwarf Fortress Rog & Veho

Grand cannon in its alpha stages, trying to make a way to launch TNT without red stone.

Short range, but it had effective power.
Our giant abomination cannon managed to get some pretty good range, in the order of 100+ bricks or so, but it was sporadic and when the server code was even buggier. I don't think it we copied it over to the new maps. The logic gates were also a huge pain to work out, we had to hollow out a huge area underneath the cannon to make it all work, it was about 30x30x15. Right now I'm just waiting on the damn minecarts to work server-side.
The server I'm admin-ing on is going live the day the October update goes live. Here are some screens from the world we created.
I'll add some screenshots later. I was going to add some of this forest we had going but an accident caused a massive fire that destroyed most... all of it.
I've been playing this a great deal lately, and I'm enjoying it. There's something that's very relaxing about exploring and building in a pure sandbox world. My current project is a massive multi-tier castle which I've been working on sporatically for a couple weeks now. Hopefully I'll finish it before the Halloween update, because I'll definitely want to rebuild the world when that comes out so that I can make use of the biomes.
It just occurred to me, if anyone is interested, I could host an Org minecraft server on my home fileserver. It's a dedicated machine that is only used for storage, bit torrent, and streaming media to other devices around my house. It used to be built out of spare parts, but I recently upgraded it to a 2.5ghz dual-core with 2gbs ram, so it's probably good enough to handle a decent load. I'm also on a FiOS line, which would hopefully produce decent connection speeds. I can't imagine that minecraft puts too much strain on a computer...
If you do, make sure you install one of the better server admin tools.

Edit - You'll also want to greatly expand the server world map by exploring so that it pre-generates the chunks. If people go beyond already explored boundaries, the server will generate the new land and this can really bog it down big time. Lastly you can use stuff like MCEdit to import your existing structures, etc.
I got absolutely no idea whatever Minecraft is supposed to be and how it is supposed to be enjoyed.
I can't stop thinking "Guess who ripped their name from Blizzard" (Creators of Starcraft and Warcraft)
Which is funny cause the game plays nothing like any of the blizzard games. I think its also just combining the two main things in the game, mining and crafting.
If you buy it and get the survival mode you will encounter creatures that can kill you at night. You can also drown to death in water or burn to death in lava. Its a lot better than classic which is just pure building.
Thanks, I'll probably put a server up after the Halloween update. The addition of biomes should make the maps a lot more interesting, and I'd hate to have the world locked into the old style due to stuff being built everywhere. I've also heard that mob damage will be fixed with the upcoming patch, which is great. Multiplayer is interesting at the moment, but nowhere near as fun as SP (IMHO) due to the lack of the survival aspect. Large community developments will be far more interesting when the players risk death and loss of supplies while working. I think that will add a bit more cooperation than exists now.
I don't see the big appeal of Minecraft. If I wanted a sandbox mining/exploration game with complexity, I'd play Dwarf Fortress. If I wanted to see my fortress in 3D, I'd use a program like Stonesense or Overseer.
There isn't really that much complexity at this stage, its just fun to play and relax
I think it's largely an aesthetic and accessibility issue. Minecraft is exceptionally easy to use. Dwarf Fortress is one of the most complex games ever made. Stonesense looks nice, but the game can't be played through it, so it doesn't have the same impact as viewing the world in Minecraft.
Minecraft is basically an extremely dumbed down version of Dwarf Fortress. I generally dislike dumbed down games because I find that fewer options means less fun. However, DF is one of the few games (along with MOO3 and perhaps Black & White) where the complexity level is so high that it actively diminishes entertainment. It's still a lot of fun, but it could be more fun if it was a bit more efficient. Minecraft is certainly not worthy of the amount of praise that is being heaped on it at the moment, but it's so easy to get into that it has a lot of appeal for a more pure, simple kind of fun. There's room in this world for both kinds of games.
It's almost too simple at this point. I found that it had a "wow" and "fun" factor that wore off after about 10 hours of near OCD-like playing. The reason I still like it and paid for it is because it has potential. When it gets opened up to modding and user content, it's just going to be nuts.
Speaking of mods, there's quite a few that have sprung up over the past few weeks now that people are figuring out how to dissect the game code. Thread is here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewto...p?f=25&t=47098

Dwarf Fortress to Minecraft converter. Looks interesting, but that's like using a converter to transfer Fallout 2 maps into Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. :P
The server is live, after much debate since survival isnt planned to go live till beta.
Survival server: 216.52.148.208:25565 (UP: If you log in and can't see anything being worked on head north North-west.)
Creation server: 216.52.148.207:25565 (down due to issues with it taking system resources.)
Where did you see that? The last I read was this post by Notch, which indicated he was currently working on it.
