I play medieval 2 on my laptop and it works fine when i do things on the big world map, but when i try to command a battle most of the time it lags on me, most of the time so bad that i cant play. Any clue why this happens? thanks.

You need a good video card to play most PC games. Sadly, many laptops don't have a video card good enough to support gaming. My guess is this is your trouble.

I always turn off grass and shadows. That helps alot!
