The most improved unit.
Hello all,
I was just wondering which EB unit people consider to be the most improved when compared to it's vanilla original (or the vanilla unit it replaced).
You may like a unit more because its stats are more balanced (companion cavalry), its recruitment area is more accurate (Marius era legionaries) it is more historically accurate (all British, Gallic, Iberian, Irish and German units) or simply becuase it looks better (Parni horse archers).
What are peoples' thoughts?

Re: The most improved unit.
Hoplites in general, i´d say.
-
Re: The most improved unit.
1. Slingers
2. Phalanx
Phalanx is made very powerful, but maybe as a balancer light forces are quite good to.

Re: The most improved unit.
i go for skirmishers in general
i found them useless in vanilla but won some great battles with them in eb

Re: The most improved unit.
Cavalry are no longer on motorbikes that look like horses. That's a vast improvement, IMO.
-
Re: The most improved unit.
I didn't think people would be suggesting skirmishers but now it's mentioned i agree. In vanilla skirmishers were little better than cannon fodder, in my current Carthy campaign I am very wary of Numidian skirmishers, just fought a battle using sacred band infantry and even they took a beating.

Re: The most improved unit.
The Parthian units because they don't wear pink pajamas anymore.

and Macedonians didn't historically become Spartan Protectorate (as far as the Macedon put Spartan symbol on their flag)

Re: The most improved unit.
Is this a joke thread? :P I love almost every unit in EB, it's always hard to decide what units to place in my army because I want all of them on the field. Guess I'll pick the "Spanish units" since I seem to pick the Lusos to play with more then the other factions. Ambushing and stuff. They also look sweet so yeah .

Re: The most improved unit.
Hoplites, skirmishers and cavalry.
I remember routing a huge Seleucid army with 2 Parthian early body guards in Vanilla. Difficulty level Medium, but the same thing would be impossible in EB. Infantry plays a much greater role in EB.

wait until you play Sauromatae in EB and had your FL / FH got 10 Influence
you can kill a fullstack with only 3 Aeldry Aezamblade if each characters is so high influenced and they had 120 men each as BG (in huge)
-
Re: The most improved unit.
True... 3 sauro or worst, Saka FM and you can beat any fullstack that present itselfd to you... that's why i get often ridiculous heroic victory :))) but i just can't get tired of those tanks!

Re: The most improved unit.
To be honest i've never tried the nomad factions yet. Till so far only the Diadochi and greek factions and SPQR. Maybe i should give it a shot once :).

Re: The most improved unit.
Pretty much everything was improved. Though the Iberians show the greatest improvement in my opinion, they had a useless roster in Vanilla.
-
Re: The most improved unit.
Praobably Thrace/Dacia. They actually have units that portray them as a unique people that are culturally unique instead of just another generic barbarian faction.

Re: The most improved unit.
solduros ftw \o also scotomareva rulle
what i deslike the most ? the lack of throrokitai for makedonia :\ it´s a big bummer the absence of those beauty´s and althoug the phalanx can secure a batle line better i like flexibility more

Re: The most improved unit.

Oh definately, no more of those silly desert axemen or Middle and Late Kingdom units. The contrast between EB Ptolemies and RTW Egypt is shocking.

Re: The most improved unit.
I miss the bull warrioirs. :(

Indeed. The Greek hoplitai units are many, many times more enjoyable to use now that they aren't in the restrictive phalangite formation.

As described at the EB website:
Quote:
"No more Mummy Returns Egyptians"
:laugh4:
Anyway, a bit off topic maybe, but I think the most important overall unit improvement is that the stupid rock-scissor-paper system is gone. In vanilla RTW you would for example never use spearmen as line infantry (not counting phalanx units), since they would get slaughtered by practically any non-spear wielding infantry unit. The heaviest of cavalry would get massacred by levy spearmen in a few seconds. The EB unit balancing makes battles so much more interesting and challenging.

One could argue that the most improved units are the flaming pigs as they don't exist and therefore don't light on fire and promptly die.

but yeah, either way, a massive improvement.
actually, all the units are a step up: better balance, more realistic stats (though as I discovered, the phalanxes are too arrowproof), even better horse archers.
and no more Roman Lin Kuei. those units should have been in a mortal kombat game.

Re: The most improved unit.
I has a LIST!!!!
First of all lets go to the most crappiest faction crap ever came up with!! GAUL
Chosen Swordsmen, : Arjos/Neitos/Suldoros Massive imrpovements.
I consider the sotoraos and ioasatae much better than the incredibly cost ineffective Foresters
But the most Improved Gallic unit has to be
Barbarian Cavalry:Leuke Epos
Now lets move on to the brother in crappiness, SPAIN!!!
The only thing IMO spain lacked was archers and decent infantry,
so it has to be the Scutarii and Balaeric and Shepherd Slingers. The cavalry has also been a huge improvement.
After that the Greek Cities come in the list of Minor Factions, the cavalry is the only thing neeeding imrpovement here.
Still I say its the Scutari that take the prize

I believe that was the Silver Shield Imitation Legionnaire so they should correctly correspond with the Hellenistic Space Marine variant.

Re: The most improved unit.
Head Hunting Maidens and the Screeching Women, the peasant units, the Egyptian units, ...
I am glad we have a lot better units now.
