question about elephants special attack when panicking

I would like to know if there are certain conditions for this to happen. It has never happened before.


My elephants get surrounded, & with about 18 left panick and were killing everyone. I use special attack (snap neck or whatever it is called). For me this has always ended that particular garrison of elephants. But after the battle I have 9 elephants. Does this happen very often & just never for me until now?

This is actually better because upkeep goes from a lot to 800 a turn and they can still do their main job, open gates without a waiting turn.

also you should always keep your elephants in reserve for the time they´re really needed like use keltik to stall the defenders place the phallanx (remove the phallanx until they are in position and then click the phallanx button or halt when they´re prepared) pull back the keltoi or whatever levy unit you´re using behinde the phallanx again crack down the wall behinde the defenders wait until everyone is trying to break the phallanx give the ellies some room and then charge them in the back and see the argys running for their lifes after a nice ellephant charge in the back (must be their big trunk on the back that scares them)

in field batles just wait and keep them in reserve until all skirmishers are out of amunnition or engaged skirmishers like peltastai akontistai or javelin throwing cavarly are your elephants biggest enemies after them kretans with missile fire or any other archer and finally slingers

elephants can destroy and run down a phallanx from the front but they´re extremly vulnerable to missile fire

Elephants are one of the best and most lethal units in game. They're also pretty easy to use.

Basically keep them away from anyone with missiles and stay away from stone walls. Apart from these everything else can pretty much be dealt with by them; even catas and elite phalangitai :)

Ah. I never thought of that. :embarassed: The ones that went down before mahout were the ones that healed. This has simply never happened for me. I usually use elephants for a short blitz, then disband. Somehow I thought this may be a bug or something. I usually try to kill a few off early with Epeiros, I just went a little to far. But now I have 6, upkeep 500/turn. They can still be used to crash gates and strike fear.

In no way was I complaining about or confused how to use elephants. They can be a bit overpowering but the upkeep justifies that. My only problem is with the armored elephants. Always by teh time I can recruit them they are very far away from the battle line.

well they´re cavarly so they can reach the frontline faster then most of your infantry

also with epeiros on turn 1 you must have pella and demetrias or you´re doing something wrong

well, just don't even tell your mahout to kill those elephants, most of the time, after run amok, they'll be healed.

plus the run amok isn't often devastating, especially if they attack your mere akontistai, haploi, and pantodapoi.
just save them in special case when you need to save your Hetairoi and Argyraspidai in fullstack
