Official thank you! With a side question :S.
I would just like to start off by saying I don't think I've ever been a member of a forum with a community as great as this :>. The fact that my first post on this forum was replied to with a welcome greeting was fantastic! And I am speaking from limited experience here, I may have come across as slightly inept with the game by my frequently asking for advice, the fact that a lot of amazing help has come my way with no "wow u suck" responses has been top notch! So yea, with that thank you out the way, time for my question.
What on earth is with all these balloons o.O.
Re: Official thank you! With a side question :S.
They are a sort of trophy displayed by members in recognition of various achievements like winning a competition, coming first place in a contest or getting recognition for other things like knowledge on a particular subject etc.
Re: Official thank you! With a side question :S.
Glad you enjoy these forums - and yes, taking into account it's a forum about wargames .... this is a rather civilized one, I fully agree.
About those balloons ...
can't claim to fully understand it but I of course have a theory: there is another word with "b" which isn't allowed here so someone had that utterly fantastic idea that we could share balloons to stare at.:laugh4:
Ahem.
Seriously: I have no idea, except for the fact that they are some kind of reputation points.
Re: Official thank you! With a side question :S.
Yeah, its like a reputation or something; as Brennus said, a trophy. I guess in theory anyone could give a balloon out for any reason but doing so would decrease the value of them. I personally have never given a balloon and don't consider myself active enough to really have the authority to give one. Its up to each person; but I would never accept one for something trivial.

Ah thank you for the replies, I was of the opinion that they were a symbol of recognition for some feat.

I'm going to just believe that only moderators and such can give out balloons haha.

Nothing as formal as that, but unless there are exceptional circumstances there is nothing that warrants a balloon normally.
Re: Official thank you! With a side question :S.
true recognition comes from personalised signatures normally banners made by the best artists in these forums to glorify some amazing achievements like winning a screen shoot competition (kind of the cultural games of the place) or winning a multiplayer tournament where everyone of the best players where present (kind og olimpic victors here)
a few people have the luck to have 3-4 such banners and i even saw 1 or 2 who cut the banners in half to show them all
just as team members have their own personalised banners naming the year in wich they joined

Haha, I made my own banner and it was my first attempt at 2d art because no one else volunteered to create one.
I'm hardly one of the best artists.:clown:

It looks very good. You took a very good screenshot with your army celebrating like that.
Also, what's the thanks thing under our avatars. I didn't see that before.
