Ok, Uh... Guy in heavy depression is kept afloat because of his affection for someone ("you"). I think I got some undertones of "the world is a horrid place and we really should do something about it" which is par for the course considering the band.
Bono is on record as saying it can mean god or your mother or someone close to your etc etc
Some people like to think it's about U2 itself and how the fans have made them big.
