While I couldn't be happier that Chipper Jones is finally out of my life after 18-19 years of repeatedly stabbing the Phillies in the heart, that was just a terrible call. It was halfway between the left fielder and shortstop for god's sake.
They were screwed over before last night, that was just the icing on the cake. Forcing them to play a gimmicky 1-game "series" for the wild card spot, when they finished with a 6 game lead at the end of the season.
I actually like the 1-game playoff idea. It makes going for the division title much more important.
This is why the vast majority of Atlantans hate the Braves. And most of our sports teams, for that matter.
Always build up our hopes for a World Series and BAM!
Hopes destroyed. Every :daisy: time.
1-game playoffs are for breaking ties. MLB scheduling in general is a fiasco. I don't know who's idea put the better team away for the first 2 games of the DS series, but he needs to be fired. And don't get me going on the unbalanced interleague sched.
I was quite pleased by the response of the fans at the Braves game though. Braves' fans have the well deserved reputation of not caring (and I say this as one of them), so kudos! :2thumbsup:
I think MLB's in a spot with the scheduling where it can't please everybody.
Go back to pre-1995 scheduling where there's no wild card or division series? People moan about baseball's stingy playoffs and lost revenue. 1995-2011 setup? The wild card robs us of great divisional races. Also, great, Bud's kowtowed before the almighty TV networks so much that due to schedule creep the World Series is played in November. Current setup? The one-game playoffs are gimmicky and unfair. There's going to be something wrong with every format.
That said, there's absolutely no justification for moving the Astros to the AL next year and giving us interleague play the whole season. My one friend who's a die-hard Astros fan (poor bastard...) is so disgusted by the entire situation he's seriously considering changing allegiances to the Nationals.
