lets say i have a line of shock units.
i click and drag behind the enemy and they start walking toward the enemy lines.
when they start getting pelted by arrows, i punch ctrl-R to make them close the distance asap.
when they hit...is it considered a charge? or would i have to pick targets for each unit and double click?

You have to click on a target to get the charge. You could single click, and when you come under arrow fire hit CRLT-R to run. Your unit will charge when it gets close to the target unit. You can see that because the text info will show the unit as "attacking".
