Does this building even exist? (Sparta's Monument of Leonidas)

So I have been looking around the encyclopedia and I can't find it anywhere, not even by searching for it. I assume it is a religious building (I may be wrong) or maybe it needs some sort of prerequesites, maybe it can only be built in Sparta?

Maybe because Sparta does not start with a major settlement (provincial capital) it doesn't get any level 5 religious buildings.

Anybody know?

As far as I remember, unique buildings can only be built in your capital.

So what does it build out of? These unique buildings require a major settlement (any building that goes higher than level 3 does) and Sparta is some tiny little village that doesn't even get 3 building slots.

-E- Nevermind, found it. It is under military (level 5 barracks essentially). That makes sense with how they've themed Sparta. Now just to figure out if I have to build it in Sparta or can only build it in a major settlement or can't build it at all because of oversights.

It's a tier 5 barracks building. You can make it anywhere AFAIK, but only one can be built at a time.

Pretty sure it can't be made in Sparta, since Sparta is a small village made of polyester and toilet paper. But you should be able to make it in Athens.

Actually that's not true, minor settlements can house tier 4 barracks buildings just fine. Considering that you have to get 2 training buildings, a temple and a PO building in your major settlement, minors have to cover your barracks and smithies. Building it in Sparta still doesn't make sense as Hellas is only a 3 settlement province. I'd go for Magna Graecia probably.

It doesn't give you any new units so building it in Sparta for lolRP is alright. I have to get there though... it's still like 120 turns of researching ^^

Not really, since you'd be missing on the upgrades one extra minor settlement would provide. At the very least, the bonus from one minor temple to Ares.

I don't know what kind of upgrades there are honestly. I've not played all the factions thoroughly yet and didn't look at the encylopedia for very long before deciding that I don't like it. With the barracks in Sparta (I still don't know if you can actually build a level 5 one in a minor settlement), I have two training things in Athens as well as an armourer. I guess you could go all the way and build a blacksmith too and temples and all but one of the great things about the Spartan infantry is that their morale is through the roof anyways. Build the temple that gives them an extra level and then give your general the houshold member that gives them another level and so on and so forth and you'll recruit rank 5 infantry from the get go with super high armour and morale.
The only units that really need the bonuses are the crappy citizen cav (although I am mostly using tarantine cav myself, they're just better) and any pike infantry units because somewhere along the line CA decided that it would be a great idea to make them die like flies the moment a ranged unit thinks about shooting them.

Either that or just don't recruit pikes. I still take 2-4 units with me in every army. They're useful for holding chokepoints or just being able to have this solid block of infantry around which to break the AI with a melee heavy enemy.

I find that pikes are now very useful. They used to be terrible, in the early versions of the game a pikewwll could be easily broken even from the front, now it's like it's supposed to be, a wall of spears that is very hard to break through. Might even have to work them into my AAR since they are so useful.

Hellenistic Metropolis (needed for 2 extra army recruitment slots) -10 food -12 PO
Temple of Ares Enyalios -10 food +6 PO (+2 unit recruitment capacity with Bread and Games which you will be running anyway)
Ephebic College -10 PO
Stratopedon -10 PO
Hippodrome (mandatory for PO management) -10 food +20 PO (+4 PO with B&G)

So your major settlement sits at:

-50 food, -2 PO

Minor settlement #1:

With Bread & Games that will be:
-58 food - 16 PO

This, as you can see, is quite a drain on your faction's food resrvers. Also, without access to the Circus Maximus (which only Rome gets) you will have serious PO management issues. They can be met with the help of Dignitaries and good governors. Alternatively you can chooes not to upgrade your major settlement to conserve PO. And minor settlements (as all 4 settlement provinces have at least one resource) will probably also need to stay tier 2 thus you will have a bit less resources to trade. But for all your trouble, you will get:

+70% Morale
+ 8 Experience for your infantry
+45% melee infantry attack
+20% melee infantry defence
+20% shield effectiveness
+25% armour
+15% charge bonus
- 15% land unit recruitment cost

The bonuses for 8 experience ranks:

+6 to melee attack
+7 to melee defence
+16 to missile shots per minute
+5 to morale
+16 to missile accuracy
-2 to fatigue

Your Royal Spartans would look like this right out of the box, all bonuses applied:

Too bad that you can only build six of them for the entire campaign, while as Rome, Macedon and the Seleucids you can build fullstacks of your elite units (Praetorian Guard, Silver Shield Pikes and Swords, MCD Royal Guard etc.)

You can build Spartan Hoplites though :D They're like the Veteran Hoplite mercs, aren't they? Pretty tough to break in any sort of situation and they're also bigger than everybody else! :D

Btw, there is a wonder somewhere that you pretty much have as Sparta anyways that increases your Bread and Games edict to +10 Happiness without any special other things. If you get a good dignitary, who boosts it even further, you can get +20 or so from it. Happy happy fun though when that dignitary dies.

Silly question, when you take a province that imports food and stop taxing it, do armies that sit inside it starve or does it just not apply any negative effects? You could do that. I doubt it will be making lots of money anyways.

Armies are unaffected. I typically take big food importing/modest earning regions offline to avoid food shortages and have never noticed any army attrition as a result.

No I mean if you have a huge recruitment center with all the upgrades and everything.. You could just not tax that and still get all the benefits. It wont make money anyways, not compared to a similar province that is geared towards making money anyways.

I understand. I have done just that. Any armies in the untaxed (and formerly food importing) area do not starve even though the province would cause a food shortage if it were taxed.
