Political Correctness is Killing this Country

A woman I used to work with at another company got fired because she freaked on my old boss. This woman happens to have been married to another woman at the time.
My boss new this when she hired her. She new this for the ~6 years the woman worked with us. She not only kept the woman on, but promoted her.
She is now suing my old company, saying she was fired because she was married to a woman. What is worse; my company may end up settling this with her out of court, and the b*#^$ could walk away with a fist full.
How can this happen? Her boss is a great woman who I have never seen discriminate against anyone. There are two gay guys who work in the same building who have not been fired for being gay. How is it that her claim has credence just because it is made by a gay woman. Something like that should be thrown out. Of course what she is doing now is only gonna make employers wary of hiring gay people, because they will be afraid that the same thing may happen to them.
Now the company's cost of operations is going up this year, and they will be able to hire fewer people. Great job PC crowd!

Food for thought, if a straight person was fired and claimed her gay boss discriminated against her for being straight, would anyone take that seriously?

This senario is not an example of run-away PC'ness. Rather of someone's naked greed and butt-hurt.

I think the political correctness he is referring to is the tendancy for certain courts to side with the greedy and butthurt over actual proof, whether through misplaced sympathy or fears of being declared homophobic

If it's going for a settlement, then it's lack of proof in total. It's pretty hard to prove that the reason you were randomly fired were because of discrimination, but the employer can either have proof about the "freaked on" or that she's known about the employed being lesbian for year's/when employed.

Actually, it would be that it is cheaper for the company to settle the matter out of court, then it would be to fight and challenge the woman. It is nothing to do with political correctness, but simple economics. Fight a court case for $20k, or simply give $5k to shut them up ?

When I first read this, I thought she and the boss got it on, and then she claimed to be fired for being a lesbian after doing the scissors with the female boss. Very confusing.

This. One woman does not equal "the PC crowd".

I think the thread title is a tad overblown. Might I suggest:

"Potentially unjust legal case is annoying me as it dovetails into my pre existing prejudices"?

This.

Reputation damage might also be a factor. Her case might be completely baseless, but if customers hear she's going to court over alleged discrimination some people will believe it.

Try being a father wanting to see one's children if the mother causes difficulties. Apparently that is a form of discrimination that is fine.
