Making peace with the papacy while excommunicated?

Early Game.
Italians.

First thing I did was take Rome. The pope is isolated in the papal states with a few weak troops. I want to keep him there. If I conquer the papacy I will just get rebellions.

How do I make peace with the papacy and get un excomminicated?

They are rejecting my peace offers even though I have 50x the troops they do.

I killed my king off but since we are still at war with them the new king was still excommunicated.

Is it possible to make peace with them while excommunicated, are they just being stubborn and will eventually make peace if I keep asking?

One time, the pope excommed me and than offered an alliance. I took it, thinking I would be reinstated, but instead I was allied and still excommed. I think you have to wait for the pope to change his mind or die.

Yeah, just drop a sh*tload of assasins on him; he is usually well protected so it might cost some time and money

I think in this case you will be better off getting rid of the Pope and so un-excommunicating yourself (is there such a word?). However in this situation, I used to find that if I conquered the Papacy and killed the Pope you were guaranteed the Papacy re-emerging every couple of years with large forces. What I have found useful is if you conquer the papacy, destroy everything so there is no castle raise the taxes to very high and withdraw, let the province rebel and for some reason the Papacy never seem to re-emerge. I have adopted this policy several times now and seems to have worked so far, although on one occasion the Italians invaded and took the rebelled province.

Here's a tip. Keep a big army in Rome cos' the Papacy will reappear BIG TIME
