Between 1230 - 40, the Golden Horde appears; a bunch of cavalry stacks. They first appear in the Khazar? territory; if you have a couple armies with a very good general, they're typically not hard to beat if you fight them in woods.
where did they come from
Central Asia, generally, just to the right of where the MTW map ends. In the 1200's they began expanding into eastern Europe (Khazar, Georgia, Armenia area on our map). There were LOTS of 'em, hence the HOARDE designation. In the game, they're tough, but beatable...and will reappear a couple times.
hehe.. nice suprise the golden horde can be... it got me when i frst played, only cause i wasnt expecting it
yep the golden horde is cool, especially if you dont get in their way http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif
king, think Genghis Kahn and Kublai(sp?) Kahn when thinking of the Golden Horde.
Be careful.
They normally appear in Khazar first and the zone north of it. They can appear in Armenia as well. A rather nasty surprise I got while playing the turks.
If you set up for them and get a decent army together to deal with them, you should be ok. They are not a pushover; don't expect to run over them like peasants http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif
If you read Marco Polo's (he does make an appearance in the game) book, The Travels it talks about Kublai Khan and his Golden Horde Mongols. It was written in the 13th century so its kind of wierd to read, but he talks about the Khan's GIGANTIC palace, immense empire, huge armies, and his 1200+ virgin lovers. In general, being a Mongol back in those days was good livin.
By the way, if you didn't already know, Marco Polo was an Italian explorer who traveled across Asia in search of...well, lots of things.
Zauba,
At least that's true if you are the king. I imagine it still sucked to be a footsoldier. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif
Yes, do not underestimate the Horde. On harder levels it will roll over your soldiers easier that you think...
I find it easier to wait until the high quality cavalry of the Great Horde wears down a little, and then return. But I have only once occupied Eastern Europe when they showed up, and let me tell you, that was a massacre for my poor troops...

is there n e other factions that pop up
Well, i don't think so. But one time i hovered my arrow over one of the rebel stacks and the name plate came up and said they were the Knights Who Say Nih

Im playing as the danes right now. I let the byz, hungarians and turks keep them occupied while I concentrated on the spanish, Italians and almos. By the time I got there they only had one territory and were easy to squash. Spooky though when they take your teritory with 20k cavs all you can do is burn your buildings and retreat regroup and kick their butts.
Yes the golden horde is really intimidating post patch yet still somewhat manageable. Their main weakness in my games has been the lack of good infantry and weak generals.
Another faction appears in the late period, but I don't want to spoil it for you.

Think Chocolate
the golden horse are fagets they r soeasy to beat
Easy to beat, but not when you are dealing with a civil war, two factions reappearing, a war with the Almohads and Novgord(at least i think that is the spelling), all at the same time. And that is the story of the first campaign I tried.
erm... What faction would this be???Quote:

Wrong Being a mongol means you dont get taxed, compare it to your present life without tax, no more filling out the income tax return form, no more IRS, and best of all more money to spend http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wink.gif. So basically you are still better off than most of the world.Quote:

Anyways, a new faction does appear; but its fairly weak. Very useful units though.
Welcome and hello Nikita. That's the way to wade right in Easy is such a relative term.
I'm as curious as [alex] about this other mystery faction, though I'm only less than halfway through my first campaign. I don't recall seeing anyone mentioning another walk-on faction around these parts. Yikes, that sounds like something out of the Old West...
Seeing this is the only place around the place, I recon this is the place. I recon.

When Ghengis Kahn styled himself as The Emporer of Mankind {the specie , not the wrestler} he meant it
He is the only serious competition for Alexander the Great in the Greatest Conqueror in Recorded Human History competition {though there were other contenders , they fall short in the semi-finals} .
The only failing of the horde in the game will be the AI managment of it ... in the hands of an expert , say Magyarkahn , that army would be almost unstopable {like it was in real life : they only stopped when the Kahn at the time drank himself to death} . Try bribing a stack of the best quality after you have reduced them to rebels , their units are actually quite good {especially their horse archers} .
See the stats at the Total War Academy .

as far as I can see, the only unexpected faction is the golden horde.... so maybe you can reveal the name of the other faction now?
I dont remember the Burgundians on the list during campaign choosing. Maybe Im wrong, but this is very interesting to me as well. Though mainly because I'll never get that late into the game, old fear of gunpowder makes me stomp people early heh. Dam civilization game.

Both the Swiss and the Burgunians appear later in the game. I'm playing a game as egyptians, around 1300, the golden horde are long gone and the swiss are currently tearing apart the HRE. I think i read in another post that burgundy only appears when ur playing the HRE.
Ghregoshi is about the burgudians and the swiss ( last one i'm not sure that apperar in high )
LOL...the golden smthin

Thanks Vlad. I can't believe hadn't heard of this before. Alas, my SP HRE campaign is currently moving along at real time. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/frown.gif
To get back on the subject of golden horde. I'm using the 1453 fix and it's some were in the 1700's now and the golden horde controls everything from israel up to germany and downto the top of italy. west of them am I and that is it. My game is ruined now as there are almost no factions left except me, the horde, italy, byzi, germans and egypte with just 1 province.
I get myself a 4 star assasin or 2 and leave them in the region so when the mongols attack I take out the khan, and the rebels are easily fought or bribed. Its sweet
The mongols got all the way to austria didnt they, I am probably wrong but I remember reading something about mongols and vienna??????
