anyone else thinks it should be possible to reinforce a unit after its been in battle. I almost hate it when i have to take one of my units that used to be 100 and now is 5-10 soldiers and say to them to go home.

You could combine the units by drag and drop the icon onto each other [EDIT] must be same type [end EDIT]. Combining units make strong units also, as the surviving soldiers tend to gain valeur in battle.
You can also retrain the unit by drag and drop its icon onto the appropriate building (such as archers->bowyer). You pay the price for additional soldiers and additional armor/weapons. You can even retrain full size units after the province get upgrades (such as extra armor or extra weapons).
Disbanding units should not be done unless the unit is totally bad [EDIT] such as obsolete unit types you don't want to use anymore or you don't want high maintenance costs because you foresee great period of peace (hah http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wink.gif )[end EDIT]

Hi mattep74p and welcome. Thanks for entrusting us with your question. You are in good hands. LadyAnn has given you two options. I'll give you another: you can use the automerge feature. You activate this by clicking on the elongated arrow on the rightside of the mini-map in upper left corner of the campaign map. One of the many auto features is merge. Activate/deactivate the function. Note that you have more control over what gets merged if you follow the manual methods described by LadyAnn.
You can also retrain by having the Army Production window of the province the unit is in open, and drag the diminished unit onto the queue. The province must have the rquired buildings to construct that unit in the first place.
Cheers.
LadyAnn wrote You can also retrain the unit by drag and drop its icon onto the appropriate building...
I hadn't heard of that option. If you can do that, why would you ever place the unit in the queue for retraining? I only know to do the latter (as well as drag&drop merging and automerging).
All you said is right, guys, I just want to share with you a trick I discovered. I hire a mercenary unit of the same tipe as the depleted unit. I drag and drop the mercenary unit over the depleted unit (on the panel below). Now I got a full unit of my own, and a unit of a few mercenaries. This way I reduce costs: hireing mercenaries is cheaper than training units, and maintaining my own troops is cheaper than maintaining mercenaries. The setback is that the mercenary general with low loialty will be in charge of your unit, but he also may have high acumen and you can put him now in charge of a province. I didn`t check this out yet for a depleted unit with a general which has a valor over 0. I guess he will remain in charge.
Mihai does the computer not still keep up with individual units in this manner. I know it does if you drag & drop a valour 4 onto a valour 1. May still be paying for those mercs in your army.
Just a thought.

Sorry, I was not too clear on the retraining part. Yes, drop your unit into training queue, not the building. I use build interchangeably for building and troops (am used to the language of play-by-email diplomacy game, where you build an army). Your province must have the proper buildings to allow retraining (can't retrain spears in non-spearmaking province).

Naagi, I checked the maintainance costs by right clicking on the unit icon on the down panel. The cost for the new full unit is the same as the cost for my own genuine units of the same tipe. I don`t think the computer says that and does the other way, because if that would be the case, then it shoudn`t allow me to put the former mercenary general in charge or a province. Maybe those who read this will try my idea and post their own observations.
