MTW Proxy

New patron scornflake has posted the following in the Entrance Hall:

I've written a proxy that will allow you to connect to other players without the need for Gamespy. A side effect is that this allows:

a) connection to a server running over a VPN (the server therefore resides on a different subnet and you would not normally be able to join a game running on it)

b) allows hosting behind a firewall, as long as all clients connecting are using the proxy.

The proxy is written in java, and comes with source code. It can be found at:

But......a honest advise......I'd be very careful with this stuff. I wouldn't release this to the public before thoroughly reading the end user agreement. Because, if I understand it right, this 3rd party program would allow people to play over the internet without a proper cd-key. I know there were hacked servers for the game RTCW (also published by Activision) that bypass cd-key check. The publisher threatened them to take down the servers or be sued.

A player called RSW made a server program for Shogun some months ago that can also ignore cd-key check. But it's for a three year old game that the pulisher dont even support anymore. MTW is only five month old, with an expansion coming soon. Activision and CA are still expecting to make money from this game. They may make trouble for you if they see your program as a threat to their profit.

Then why didn't they give us a decent server to begin with?

Lol, funny.

In a breach of contract case, when one party breaches the contract the other party is entitled (and often is required) to "cover"-- which means to attempt to find a substitute for the breaching party in order to reduce their damages.

In this case, I think we would have a potential breach of contract claim against Activision for the lack of multiplayer support and the many CTD's caused by the Gamespy server. You could say we have an obligation to "cover" and find other suitable multiplayer servers, so that our damages are reduced (from, say .00001 cents a day to .000000001 cents a day, lol).

If Activision comes after any of you for using a proxy server, let me know and we can work on a nice letter explaining this position.

Keep in mind this is not legal advice and its not neccessarily a "winning" argument, but it is (in my mind) a potentially valid position. Activision breached their contract/warranty w/ respect to Multiplayer support (CTD =faulty product) and proxy users are simply trying to make reasonable use of the MTW MP product as originally promised/warrantied by Activision ("cover").

Has anybody tried this yet? Its a pity to let it go to waste..if it works it would be a great way of setting up private games without having to use the MTW/Gayspy server. You could still chat via gamespy arcade but host your games independantly.

well i think its legal since w ecan consider mtw not being supported and teh add on can eb considered as a very late patch... teh publisher is already heading for Rome...
