I've been playing this amazing game for a couple of weeks now and was given this link recently so decided to join up tonight.
Right this might be a really silly question but here goes...
This has happened twice to me. As England i attack France .. i mean it has to be done even if it's for no reason the French are there for attacking .. that's what they are for!!
Well obviously the Pope sticks his nose in pretty quickly and threatens to excommunicate you if you don't end the war in 2 years!
Well the first time round i ignored him .. i mean it's the FRENCH they shouldn't count!! But the second time i sent an emissary to discuss peace!! The French refused!! Next year i was excommunicated!! Well HELLO??? Surely if the French refuse it should be THEM who are excommunicated .. i mean i tried!!!
This sounds as dodgy as a Frenchy to me!!

Its pretty hard to get a ceasefire in this game especially if you where the aggressor. But it dosen't matter, when u get the message from the pope saying that you have 2 years 2 end hostilities it means that u have 1 turn to end any seiges & u have to stop attacking for 10 years. You will loose you excommunication when either your king dies or the pope dies. So either assassinate him or if you have loads of heirs send your king into battle & kill him off.

Try playing the HRE then you get a real taste of why to hate excommunications. You are one of the biggest nations around so the pope almost always sides with the little guy. Even if he attacked you took a province and all you're doing is taking that province.
My only solution ever has been to conquer all of italy except the papal states, and rush into the papal states with a few heavy cavalry and target just the pope's unit. Kill him and then withdraw. I have to do this annoying thing every single time I attack anyone.
I don't use assasins and inquisitors enough to get them to the level needed to kill a faction leader(Pope).

I was excommunicated pretty early this time as the English. The HRE were putting the pressure on the French from the east, so it was only a matter of time before he tried to bring the troops from Brittany through my territory. I attacked first & the pope excommunicated my while I was beseiging the castle. Since then, the Spanish & the HRE have been kissing up to the pope by launching crusades against me. I've managed to gain territory in this process, but the Spanish & I keep trading Anjou back & forth.
The last turn I played, I successfully assasinated the pope. On the same turn, Spanish & HRE invaded 4 provinces, of which I won 3 & lost Anjou. Now that I'm no longer excommunicated, I'm hoping to have a ceasefire so I can rebuild my army. At the moment I'm cranking out whatever troops I can build & ship to frontier, but that doesn't always make the best constituted army.

hey, i have 3 questions, because I dont have the game yet, so i dont know the answers, hence my asking them...
anyways, here they are who are HRE, 2. how can you assasinate you OWN king? and 3. what is the point of killing the pope?

so if you become excommunicated, and then kill the pope, when the new pope arrives, your not excommunicated any more?

1. HRE is short for "Holy Roman Empire." We would call them the Germans today, though in truth the area was a mess of little nobledoms until the 20th century.
2. I don't believe you can assasinate your own king. You can try to get him killed in battle.
3. Assasinating the pope means that a new pope will be selected. At that point, all previous excommunications are void. The only way to end your excommunication is a change in papacy, & killing him simply speeds up the process.

Eh.
I went in and killed the pope.. next thing I know, there was a new pope and he immediately starts throwing his threats around.
Chump never learns. Killed him again, garrisoned the place.
He's like the Cat who Came back, though, brings a bigger army every time.. I gotta learn where he gets them twelve platoons of heavy cav outta no wheres...

My pope seems to have completely disappeared. Northern Italy and Rome have been under my control for the last 40 years. The papal states were under my control but I let thre rebels take it. The pope hasn't appeared. It's a blessing and a curse. I don't want the excommunication but I also had gotten myself ready for some major crusading but that can't be done with out the pope.

ok, well theres some fun things to do with, firstly is take the papal states early, then kill off the other catholic factions while he is gone. Then you leave the papal state with very little defence, and hope he comes back again, he should take the place, then you can go on crusading withought those damn catholics in your way

IF ...
1- I get excommunated.
2- I have no heir.
Will I have to face a rebellion when my king die ? Is it (1) and (2) that provoque the rebellion ?

1) This will reduce the loyalty of your pios generals.
2) This will spark the civil war.
If faced with this upcoming I suggest you do a purge of all your disloyal generals.

Interesting stuff but my original point was that after being threatened by the pope I sent an Emissary to the French and offered peace .. they refused and i was Excommunicated!! Sure the French King should be excommunicated as I did try to make peace.
This means that enemies can get you excommunicated by just refusing peace with you!! That's hardly fair!!

Them not accepting your offer of a ceasefire had nothing to do with it.
Did you pull out of the province that you had taken. If you didn't this is why you were excommuincated.

why is all so afraid being excommunicated???
Ive been that several times.
Ofcourse the other faction launch crusades against you, exept your allies, but thats not a big deal. Just fight them out then crush the countries that are around you.
The biggest crusade I had against me was on 5000 men attacking my province where I only had 1200 men, it wasnt that hard to win I killed 3600 men took no prisoners and lost only about 600 men. All u have to do is to hide 4 units on 2 each flank and when the enemy is going for ur center u flank them try to get a rare attack. After the enemy rout make sure u have atleast 4 cav units, light cav is best they dont get tired so fast, to ran after the enemy and not ur foot soldiers put them back where they were. And before the enemy get reinforcement pull back ur cav and repeat. But after each attack the enemy makes pull back your front, so when u need to withdraw some of your units so they dont have to walk that far, plus ur reinforcement dont have to far to the front. Plus your enemy have to walk longer which tire them alot specially if the weather is bad.

Not afraid at all just didn't understand why it had happened when i tried to offer peace. I've not been attacked yet after being excommunicated and you keep your allies but I want to CRUSADE!!!! I don't see why the excommunication can't be revoked if you are a good boy for a few years!!

Well i understood different. Thought that if you made peace and didn't get excommunicated then after 10 years you could attack again but once excommunicated the only was out was for the Pope to DIE!!! DIE DIE DIE DIE DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! Ahem ....

play the HRE for a while. You'll eventually realize your economy isn't able to support a large enough army to fight off crusades and to prevent your other neighbors from taking a bite out the big land filled HRE pie.

i was lucky today... playing as italy, the hungurians attacked me, so i went in thoe kick thier asses... the pope warnes me not to interfere after taking 3 proviences, but i didnt listen, next turn the pope died, and i was free for the rest of hungury to fall, and they did... god blessed my sitution by killing his pope :-D

No that only works when the Pope has warned about Excommunication.
The only ways to get out of one, is to:
A) Kill the Pope
B) Kill your king
C) Conquer the Papacy
The last one I would not advise for.
