Not sure are these mentioned before. Can you guys verified the numbers with F1?
Net melee point = base_melee + (spear=1, pike=2).
Net defend point = base_defend + shield(small=1, large=2, cav=1) * shield_modifier(1, 0.5) * can_use_shield_in_melee(yes=1, no=0) + (spear=1, pike=2)
Net armour pooint = base_armour + shield(small=1, large=2, pavise=3, cav=1) * shield_modifier(1, 0.5)
Got it from target's xls.

The valour bonus is well-known. I just like to confirm on the bonus of spear and pike. As well as the missing armour piercing bonus. I can't find its use or any references to armour piercing in Target's .xls.
These equations are located in worksheet named "Unit Def" Column U, V and W of Target's .xls. It references worksheet named "Tables".

Cavalry shield is only +1, just like small shield. But shields are already factored in.

Something like ( target armour - 3) / 2, but I forget exactly.
The formula in the spreadsheet was what I started off with in the game, but I changed the rank support bonuses as I didn't think they work well enough. I didn't bother changing the spreadsheet formula since that particular column is for info only, and has no effect on anything.

Why the mounted crossbows don’t get attack bonus from metal smiths?
I am very puzzeld, is it a bug?
They have swords as well. If they do, it is not shown on the F1 screen in battle mode. I have build metal smiths level 2 and was very disappointed to see no bonus. Explanation please?

That was odd... Has anybody else experienced this??? Every unit is supposed to get weapon upgrades.
Longjohn, that AP formula is it a bonus to the units attack or is it how much the defence is lowered? I suppose it is the first, but still.
And does shields count as armour, I know they add armour but is it counted in the equation? I mean then it can be effective to attack from the front as opposed to flank (not rear though).

I have a saved game playing Germans. Very odd indeed, nothing on the F1 screen. What about the other missale units, do they get weapons upgrades from the metal smith?
I am more and more convinced that it is a bug.
I placed a lot of hope in the metal smith weapon upgraded mounted crossbows. Range and melee power combined into one unit.

All units should get the upgrade. It is an upgrade to their melee statistics.
I wonder how that has happened.
