I wonder what good it does on the battlefield, I have understood it lowers morale of the enemy, but would anyone care to tell me how much?
I got that info from before the game was out, so I might be wrong in my assumption. Also I have not noticed any Morale penalty on my troops when going up against Dreaded enemies, but then again I don't keep track of my troops Morale from battle to battle.

Kraxis the only thing I've found on dread is in the manual pg. 27 : dread is the degree which this man instills fear in the people of a province he governs. This is useful for increasing loyalty.
No description of a numerical value. I guess to rule a province effectively, ie no revolts, one must be either very popular, or scare the crap out of people.

I'm not sure, but i had a 5 Star general and a dread of 8, he had an army of 1200+, i was attacking german, the germans's general wasnt that bad either, we had equal numbers of troops, i attacked him, he withdrew his army when he had sight of my general. dunno why. can devs clarify this...

I'd like to know as well
my eductated guess, two impacts :
- for governors on strat map, modifier on loyalty of province (but maintain level artificially high, so if gov dies or goes away maybe higher probability of rebellion).
- for generals on battle field, modifier to morale of enemy troops

Well I think its common knowledge that dread raises happiness so long as a governor is IN HIS PROVINCE, but if he leaves the dread effect leaves with him.
But the info noone seems to know is what effect high dread has IN COMBAT, so far I see only guesses.

If you put your mouse over the general's command rating, a rank 5 general will give the following description: "the enemy know fear when they see his banner flying in the field of combat. A sound military thinker and superb tactician".
I'd say the "fear effect", if there is such a thing, comes from the general's rank and not dread.

I know about the happiness, but I wondered about the value Dread has on the battlefield. It seems that highly Dreaded generals are more successful than an equal general without the Dread.
But perhaps it has only been coincidence???
I just seem to remember that we were told before the game got out that Dread was valuable on the field. Anybody else remember something like that.

and i read everything i could find (very little info to be found actualy!)
- and in doing so "dug up" this thread, and rather than start a new version...

I've noticed that assigning a governor with dread rating increases the loyalty of a province. One dread seems to be around 5% loyalty.

no way, that's not true. governor's dread works no metter where he is. dreadin my conquered citizens is my basic policy and it works, although I'm rarely keepin the governor in the place he governs.
maybe it works BETTER when he is in his province, I have to check it. still, it may vary depending on difficulty level...? dunno

Well it is nice to know I'm not the only one. I didn't really want to keep bumping this thread.
But I still want to know if Dread has any other value than happiness. If not then there is hardly any cause for it, as I can more use out of 10% happiness (release rebels). Then I would have to rethink my style of play...

One thing that seems to be forming a pattern is that the enemy tends to run less if your general has "scant mercy" or an of the other vices that come from killing prisoners...
i cant prove it, but several times i have had peasants (yes, peasants), actually stand up to my heavy infantry/cavalry and not break for at least 10 seconds...
ill have to research it a bit more though.

I've had peasants not only withstood a Knight Templars charge(charge mod to 8), but also annihilated the Templars in the process.

Those Peasants must have been something like Valour 8-9 and your Templars Valour 0.

hmmm...
will have to test the govenor dread/percentage loyalty point,
seems feasable.
also will watch for any visible change for the "scant" or "no mercy" vices on enemy battlefield conduct,
but i have lost chiv knights to urban militia when using a "no mercy" general...
?? still no explanation from developer types... ??
