I have never modded before; just enabled the Russians to be playable in Early.
I think that the ship building time is to long and historically incorrect( 3 turns/years for a longboat). Russia, like Denmark and other coastel factions are at an economical disadvantage.
I would like to reduce the building time for boats to only 2 years - Can anybody give me some detailed instruction on how to do this?
I don not have a special editor, just what came with Windows XP.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Open up the unit_prod11.txt file with the Gnome unit editor, and scroll down to row 123 (Longboats). Column 5 dictates how many years it takes to build it. Just lower it and save the file.
EDIT: You can get the Gnome UnitProj Editor by going to the Org's download sections under the Tools. If you dont want to download it, just open up the uni_prod11.txt file in Notepad and run a search (F3) for Longboat, and change the first 3 to 2 (or 1 if you wish)

Thank you, kekvitirae, for the fast response.
I will give it a try.

I downloaded the GnomEditor as suggested and made the changes at row 123, and saved everything. Now, I can not load the game - the error message reads "to many columns in parsefile". Where did I fail? Some advise on correcting my mistake?

restore the origonal file, and try again.

Odd. Did you remember that columns are the ones going left and right, and rows are the ones going up and down?
If it continues, just edit the file in Notepad
-
Funny, while the changes made in GnomEditor (3 to 2) appear; they do not when I open the unit_prod file in Notepad. Do I now have two conflicting files?
-
Did you save the file before you opened it in Notepad? If not, that's the reason.

Both GnomEditor and Notepad indicate the origional time of 3 years; however, the message that there are to many columns in the parsefile still does not allow loading. It seems, I need to reinstall the game - or is there a way to check columns?
Where can I find the unit_prod file in Windows Explorer?

Here is the file you want. Just unzip in your root MTW directory (C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\) and overwrite.
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Backup your files before you mod

Thank you kekvitirae for trying to help.
I found the culprit - I have two MTW version (MTW-orig. and MTW-Mod) on my c: drive. Obviously the GnomEditor can not discriminate between the two; hence the conflicting changes when switching from Gnom to Notepad.
I think I should eliminate one version and try again.
I will try again and let you know later what the result was.
