I bought Medieval Total War a few days ago. I have the game updated to v1.1, and don't have the Viking expansion.
So far, the game runs just-about perfectly, except that if I try to exit the game once I've got a campaign loaded, the game locks up after playing the final 'exit' sound, with the 'do you want to quit?' dialogue box still visible on screen.
Usually, I can exit using either the Windows-menu key or Ctrl-Alt-Del and force-quit the game, but sometimes when doing that, I don't get to see the desktop, which makes things harder - I have to guess the keystrokes needed to quit the game.
My PC is a Duron 1000 with 512MB memory and a GeForce 2 GTS graphics card. Does anyone know if this is a common problem, or if there's a solution to it? I tried a forum search, but couldn't find anything similar.

I get the exact same problem with a completely different setup and Viking invasion patched to 2.1 and i've never been able to find the problem.
I just hit control+escape to exit the game now and shut it down from the task menu but its very irritating.
im running on an Xp2200+, Windows XP Pro, ATi Radeon 9600 Pro, 512mb DDR, Soundblaster Live 5.1 soundcard and an Asus A7S333 mobo.

I had similar problem some time ago. I don't remember exactly what I did but it was either updating drivers to latest or unclicking hardware mixing in sound options in game.
Currently i can use hardware mixing with no problems so you might really try updating all the drivers and bios.

It happened a few times to me as well. Only once did the popup box remain visible, every other time the exit sound was played and then nothing.
Then instead of alttabbing out I just waited a bit, went to the loo, and when I got back the program had ended anyway. Since then I just give it a bit of time. I haven't had the exit bug anymore.
I am running Direct X 9.1 on a brand new machine.

Do we have an update from anyone on this?

I know this problem too. Only a small one compared to in-game crashes :))
