(sorry to post the infamous GAH or any others I didn't allow)
lol, I think Ninja Gaiden deserves to be up there.... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wink.gif
Hmm. Depends on the player, I'd say. Some people are intrinsically better at action games, others at strategies. Also depends on difficulty. For example, Doom 2 at its hardest difficulty (Nightmare?) was just insane. I think all comparisons should be made using the difficulty level for which the game was originally designed.
Chaos Strikes Back (Amiga / ST) probably gets my vote. Very tough without outside aid.
JA 2: Unfinished Business was plenty tough even on default difficulty. So was X-Wing, IIRC. Alien versus Predator was moderately challenging with the marine.
Can't really think of any truly challenging new PC games, though. Maybe Massive Assault (retail version); the AI in MA is very good. Certainly not Morrowind, unless you're playing a pure mage.
I'd put my vote on Die by the Sword. Your left hand was for controlling your body WASD-style but you needed your right hand on all the num-keypad keys just to control the movement of the character's right hand swinging the sword.
X-Wing on the PC has to be the toughest game I ever played hands down, no contest...although I can still hear the Abort mission Mission a failure line from its sequel because I heard it so many times.
:Froggy remembers the mission in X-wing where you had to do some container identifying, then disable a whole fleet of very dangerous craft while fighting what seemed like millions of fighters and trying to protect some friendly mission critical craft, while flying a Y-wing (aka slow ship with the manoeuvrability of a house) all in a very strict line limit. Froggy huddles in a corner and starts to cry, thinking of the months that it took to beat that mission.:
Operation Flashpoint:Resistance was one of thee most intolerably difficult games I ever played. Besides the fact that the whole OpFlashpoint series was a realistic, tactical shooter, I remember some of those missions in Resistance took weeks, many deaths and a crazy amount of reloads to complete.
Still, the game (like the original Cold War Crisis and Red Hammer campaigns) was well worth the headaches and keyboard smashes.

its got to be Hearts of Iron, when i 1st played it i was literally dropping from my comfy chair in anguish.
everything was just confusing the shit out of me.
the 1st 5 minutes scared me so bad i quit the game and didnt play it for an entire week O.O;
The difficulty of Ikuriga is just sadistic. I also had a very hard time with myth, even on the easiest setting.
shoulda been an 'other' option...as there is a game called tetris that is well known, and i believe that this game is endless if i'm not mistaken, tis impossible to beat outright, so i find this game in particular to be 'most' difficult, and if there really is no end to it, then i find it pointless and time consuming, and annoying if that's the case really
is there an end??? if not, or one that's impossible to reach, isnt it like trying to kindle a campfire at the bottom of a lake??? why attempt if failure is always the outcome???
Tetris never ends, it just keeps speeding up until you fail. I never understood the craze for that game.
TIE fighter (Sequel to X Wing) had some stupid levels in it. But that was OK as it was cool, partic. the re-release with the more up to date graphics engine. X Wing vs TIE Fighter wasn't cool though - the last levels on both sides for the Balance of Power add on put me off the series forever.
Tom Clancys Rainbow 6 games, as unless you spent ages planning it out trial and error the stupidity of your comrades would inevitably have you tearing your hair out. Oh, No.1 just died going through that door. Will I use a grenade, flashbang, charge through or wait outside? No wait I know, I'll walk through the door like nothing just happened.. BLAAMMM.
My nomination though: AvP
I loved playing Alien Vs Predator as an Alien, running along ceilings biting marines heads off en passant, but I was too scared to play as a marine or a predator once the aliens appeared. I just couldn't take it. The near total lack of sound when they came at you didn't help (was this a part of the game or the PC I played it on? )
There is an end which i have only achieved once...EVER If you can get rid of ALL the lines (so there is nothing on the screen) then you've finished it.Quote:

Quake is the most difficult game I ever tried. Of course this was in multiplayer 5-6 years ago. I was playing quake a lot with my friends and really good at it, so I thought. Untill we arrived at a huge LAN party (500+, at least that is a lot when you are only 14) and I signed up for the Quake competition.
I lost -5 (he kept shooting me in the magma with the rocket launcher) 53 or something.
Now that was a challenge, the hardest ever
note: the guy who beat me (in my first game) won the competition http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/wacko.gif
Hardest game ever? (thinks way back)
Lemmings I never knew anyone who could complete that...
Forget all your modern easy games, that one was Rock
I never knew anyone who could complete that one. (though I gained a lot more pleasure Nuking the poor suckers rather than getting them home) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif
I never could get my head around the alien level in Aliens versus Predator gold edition just too damm confusing half the time i got lost and then some marine would step out of nowhere and blow me away. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...c-computer.gif
But I notice someone else above has stated they loved it but couldn't get the hang of the predator or marine I couldn't get enough of those two killing the alien queen was brill but i managed it easier than other parts of the game but I was useless at the alien too disorientating. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/gc-help.gif
the Wild Vikings was troublesome at times too
My uncle completed all the lemmings games, he was a lemmingoholic. His daughter was really good at the games too, but she always liked to nuke the poor green haired dopes. :remembers seeing her cousin nuking lemmings in Santa suits to the tune of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer in the christmas lemmings game: http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...nquisitive.gifQuote:

ahhahaha, I know exactly what you are talking about frogg, the xmas edition of lemmings was damned hard
I bet though that lemmings have been done in 3D
They've tried, though...Quote:

Exec 2 Great idea Lets add really dodgy controls too
Exec 1 I know I know We can also make the action take place all over the cylinder so the player needs to be in 4 places at once, but not allow them to see more than one place at a time
Shirt 1 Great work boys, pay rises all round
I finished the original Lemmings game, but found the others just a rehash and never got interested enough in them to finish them.
The hardest game I ever played was one of those Myst-like games. It was awhile back and I will be darned if I can remember it. I gave it away to someone when they said they never had problems finishing a game. I finished most of the Myst games in less than 15 hours playing time and I ran thru the URU game in 10 hours of play, but this game was not logical and you had to be versed in binary algorythms to solve some of the more obscure puzzles :) hehe If I remember the darn name I will warn you away from it.
7th Guest? It had some pretty nasty puzzles IIRC...
