I was wondering if anyone knows how to keep mass rebellions from occurring late in the game. Maybe what happened to me is the result of a bug... Regardless:
I was playing my beloved Byzantines (I know, some of you don't like them, but check my Username before you judge) on Early Hard, and I had laboriously conquered practically the entire map. After stamping out those pesky Papists time after time, I finally had the last two factions cornered in their last two strongholds: the Polish in Sweden and the Sicilians on Malta. Both strongholds are about to fall. It's 1322 or so, and I had an extensive spy network and decent garrisons in all provinces to keep rebellions down. The game is mine, right?
All of a sudden, loyalty plummets to 0% in practically every province, unless I happened to have a large (four stacks or more) army on hand. I click the End Year button because, large as my army is, I can't seem to get loyalty back up. The largest rebellion in history breaks out.
The French re-emerge, attacking 29 () provinces in force. The Italians re-emerge, attacking another 11 provinces. Polish loyalists pop up in 4 more provinces. Run-of-the-mill rebels pop up all over the place, even in Constantinople where I have a fairly large reserve army.

Have you by any chance, isolated your king in an island, or did your king die in that turn?
Besides the rebellions, is there any other major event that turn?

That is just the way the game works, the last great challenge that is being thrown at the player before the end, just when everything looks fabulous and a perfect triumph is just around the corner. My empire was solid and I had only few enemy provinces left to conquer when The Longest Year happened.
BTW, I'm still stuck in that campaign

I'm glad they stuck that in. I tend to get bored if I get to a point where I simply cannot lose. Having a spontaneous revolt in half my provinces once I control about 50% of the map makes things a little more uncertain.

Playing Turks, I once got a longest year with all of the province except Rum.

The Longest Year. What a wonderful turn of phrase At least my Longest Year wasn't as bad as voigtkampf's Great writing, by the way.
Thank you for your assistance, folks. I am still bogged down in that campaign, but I don't think I will be able to finish it before time runs out. And I'm not computer-savvy enough to trust myself to try to mod the game to allow me to proceed longer. It's still a blast fighting it out, though.
To answer your questions, Sun Tzui, the Byzantine Emperor was leading the attack on Malta (isolated on an island, obviously), but he survived the battle and did not die otherwise in my Longest Year. None of my heirs joined the rebellions, and no other events occurred that I noticed to trigger this phenomenon.

Even if you won the battle and your emperor survived the port would be destroyed on Malta cutting him off from his empire. Without the direct link to the emperor your loyalty plummeted and the rebellions sprang up.
You must keep your faction leader out of the island battles if it can be avoided because this will cause rebellions often. In fact, late in the game I usually keep my faction leader in the home province, close to my best infrastructure and most valuable lands.
