yesterday i lost Castile to something ridiculous like one unit of French catapults cuz i had no army there for that turn
the next turn i took Castile back, and i destroyed 4 of my own buildings wtf?
i did not WANT to destroy those buildings, nor did i CHOOSE to destroy those buildings. so WHY were they destroyed? that ticks me off A LOT. how do i not destroy buildings when taking back MY OWN BUILDINGS?
No way to avoid it but to have a garrison there to beat invaders back - never trust allies to keep the peace when you leave a juicy province unguarded they will backstab you next turn. Thats just the way the game works, as in real life. Buildings and infrastructure are destroyed when armys fight through them.... Consider it this way, the frenchies saw u coming and decided to persue a scorched earth polocy on your lands. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif
always keep some garrison in there even if 2 peasants. they can retreat into castle and give you time to muster forces to take the province back.
In VI, if they never take the province proper, nothing is destroyed.
how did they get into castile anyhow?
your border should be navarre/aragon and you should always have naval superiority.

this happens to me all the time i've lost Castile, Navarre, Morroco, Granada in this exact way (but later reclaimed them with constant Jihads)
how is the French making troops invisible on the campaign map like this? it really drives me nuts because i can't plan where to put my defenders since i can't SEE the enemy armies before i end the year
The French are coming into your province from the sea. Build ships and place them in the sea regions around your coast. Hit the V key and any green sea region is yours, while red are occupied by an enemy. Build enough ships and then destroy all of the French Boats.

Having a garrison there wont matter unless it is sufficiently powerful enough to deter the initial attack, or win the initial fight. The French will pillage when they force your garrison into the castle, and you will repillage when you force the French out.
But having a garrison to make the French besiege you will help to keep the castle from de-leveling so long as you can retake the province before the siege ends. A small garrison is best to make the siege last long enough for you to relieve it.
Just remember to ASSAULT the castle in the event that the enemy actually takes it. Apparently, a castle will not delevel when assaulted, only when it is sieged down. {That may be false, but thats my assumption from having read it somewhere... It could be vice versa, I've never bothered to check.}
It may very well be so that having NO garrison is better, actually. Does anyone know if buildings are destroyed when you take an empty province? Or does there have to be a fight in order for wanton destruction to occur?
Plundering after a province is captured or recaptured is simply part of the game, sorry. It can work to your advantage when you capture a well developed enemy province, burn everything to the ground and then withdraw. Of course, if you have the VI expansion pack, only the Vikings can do any pillaging if the castle still holds out.
All the provinces in the Iberian Penninsua border the sea so there is no way to adequatly defend them unless you build a decent navy. Having naval supremecy will also mean that you can launch seabourne attacks on French provinces and prevent them from massing their army on the border.
Naval supremacy is essential in MTW... In my first MTW campaign (as the Byz) I didn't build a navy, and I finally got overrun by the Turks who invaded Naples, Greece, Crete, Rhodos, Cyprus, Nicaea AND Constantinople in one turn http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...gc-stunned.gif I could only repel them from Constantinople as I was just building a strong army there + I had a lot of soldiers in my garrison... its three step course
1) get soldiers
2) use them to garrison
3) then protect ur coasts with ships

bribe the enemy army in the castle. then your invading forces are just lieving siege. and no buildings are destroyed.Quote:

It might just be me, but when you're besieging an enemy castle and it is about to fall and you have to keep a large force there for several reasons take out your horses, you'll lose more buildings that way. It also seems to happen when you decide to enter the castle. Just keep horses away.

Sun Tzu says that poverty and distress follow wherever an army goes. These are feudal armies made of personal allegiances, and one of the sweeteners is the pillage and rapine they get to enjoy after a battle. Many European lords allowed their troops to pillage their own cities if they had fallen to the enemy, as did the Romans. Often, this pillaging could not be prevented.
Yes, pillaging was a huge problem for armies. They knew that upon storming a place, own's soldier's often looked for booze and terrible destruction of lifer and property resulted.
That is frustratingly realistic.
