Is it possible to *lose* a character vise once it appears? I'm pretty sure you can earn the vice's opposite (in theory conter-acting the vice), but do they ever go away?

nope, they never go away.
this is a big complaint that they don't work on a slider type thing but rather your have contradictory vices.
I have plenty of generals with weak principles and man of honour or something like that.
but they may change, in fact getting worse.
e.g. some of my generals first were a little strange and after a while became totally crack brained.
