Was doing some geneological research and the furthest back my Irish line goes was to the immigrant ancestor, Barnabas O'Reilly, who apparently hailed from a place called Gowick Island in Ireland, which might have been in County Cork.
However I get absolutely nothing when searching for Gowick Island on the web. Has anyone ever heard of it? Maybe the name changed in the past two centuries.
Thanks and Erin Go Bragh

Nope, no Gowick Island in Co Cork:

maybe it was Goswick Island (which would be in NI)?
Unless, as you say Clear Island was once Gowick.

I guess either one's a possibility - thanks for the tip

It may be one of the damp little rocks next to the big damp island next to the bigger damp island off the WESTERN coast of France. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif

Rufus , It can be a problem as place names have changed a lot in Ireland and are still changing , it can be very confusing trying to find somewhere from 20 years ago let alone 200 years .

aahhhh yes...the quaint sound of the lower crested-plume haired Father Jack, its only habitat....DDRRiiIInnNNNKKK

*Ted, look at Father Jack's bed, surrounded by wire fences and razor wire, speaking to higher-level priest.*
As you can see, he won't get out of that.
*Priest turns to leave.*
Again.

Try county wicklow actually I believe your problem may lie there. Possible that in america when people were recording such things they could speak as gaelige (irish) so they recorded what they thought it sounded and spelt like in as bearla (english)
This may be a help
