Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
After careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that there is too much complaining about RTW's fantasy unit's thread after thread with the same musings about how "I may not now get rome because of these stupid romanian wizard women warriors". I want too see some good points for a change
No 1
It is the newest incarnation and I want it now I will be crucified for this but really I don't want to go back to shogun's tiny units limited tech and unit tree and laughable trade model.
No 2
The new campaign map look's so cool changing seasons volcanos erupting etc etc the idea of having to defend mountain passes bridges instead of just a few peasants in a fort is a big improvement
No 3
If reports are to be believed there is a big box of tricks included for modding if this is true then I am deffo getting it.
No 4
Are we not getting ahead of ourselves giving out about some LOTR type units when we haven't even used them yet hell it might be great craic to play with them
No 5
I hooked an addict a total war junkie and I need a new fix man

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Overall, I've no doubt that R:TW will be the "bees knees". The period covered is my personal favorite and with a mod here and a mod there this one will be on my HD forever. ~

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Agree on all counts, i think it will be simply great and one of the most playable games ever

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
#1: Better graphics. Yes it matters.
#2: Much, much better campaign map. Opens a whole new level of campaign map tactics.
#3: Improved diplomacy.
#4: Can play Carthaginians (always had a something for them coming from Lebanon=Phoenicia=Carthage's mother country).
#5: Playing as Romans, the showdown with the senate (i.e big bad battle) happens at the end. In MTW, getting to the winning screen means tediously cleaning up the map after you control 50% or so.
#6: Something new to try.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
The game looks great, and I love the new battle map.
-
Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
1. Everything's 3D
2. The new campaign map looks awesome
3. The fact that battle-maps accurately represent where the two opposing armies meet (like we saw in the 16 minute video)
4. Everything's 3D (again)
5. Advanced diplomacy
6. Dumping of the one-province-a-turn system of movement
7. Everything's 3D (again again)
8. I get to play as the Celts (once I've unlocked them ~ )

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
1.- Cities sieges ... they open a new world in the tactical map
2.- strategic and tactical map are the same, new kind of missions can be done.
3.- Again the tactical an strategic map are the same, so you can choose the terrain where the battle will come so you can take advantage.:knight:
4.- Diplomacy ... this is one of the best improvements.
5.- best AI, well this is a hope ~:p

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
I agree the game, in particular SP, does look to have tremendous scope. I loved the seasonal change to the strategy map. Terrain reproduced in the battle map is great and many other things SP related that have been mentioned already, apart from 'locked' factions ( that's crap IMO )
What can I say about MP???
Not a lot been added here it would seem
In Single Play the game will rock, no doubt about that.
In Multi Play....... ~

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
I don't think anyones doubting that this game will be very good, but it isn't the best it could be. I only play SP, and will only play it, and the incredible map and diplomacy should be awesome. As for the rest, well theres modding.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
#1 Reason: Diplomacy.
I can't wait until I can have vassal states as well as powerful allies which will help me go to war as well as pay me to attack shared enemies.
#2 Reason: Graphics... self explanitory
#3 Reason: Easier to manage battles
The way that it's supposed to be much easier with the mouse clicks being more standard RTS style, how units can disengage much easier as well as supposedly being able to meld units in battle lines to make one solid line instead of a semi-solid line.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
I just WANT IT.I WANT IT NOWWWWWWWWWW.
Ahem............sorry.
1.3-d graphics.
2.Improved diplomacy/agent aspect of the game.
3.Marriages and alliances will MEAN more in this game and not be just a token gesture.
4.Spartans.
5.Modding kit..........it's gonna be fun.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Well, many many little reasons, but I'll drum up a few decent ones.
1) The world is hundreds of little battlemaps, this will make for excelent tactics, for example the english (or rather the barbarians who would later become the english) always had great skill at choosing the battlefiled to favour them, not just with hills and ambushes.
2) The senate. The pope is annoying, yeah sure, but the senate is (I think) going to be more like a few GA style goals, and if you completely ignore them then you get rebelliosnes and stuff, like being excommnicated.
3) City battles. Siege or not, I want to ight in the city streets, set fire to market stalls and charge over a church with an elephant!
4) Predictably, ELEPHANTS! ME WANNA ELEPHANT!
5) Legions being able to lock sheilds into a proper phalanx and other such formations, I want to watch the puny enemies arrows bounce off our heads.
6) Being able to expand the area of control my cities/citadels cover. That works far better than provinces in my head, though I'm still not sure about borders, political and such.
7) Diplomacy, it will be nice to have some.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Lets face it, it looks awesome, and what else is there in comparison? I for one am not going to let the anorak griping stop me from getting it, let them miss out if they want.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Well nothing is stopping me from getting the game on release day, though i take it this thread is some sort of wishlist? or listing what features rome has? either way....i'll list what i want and what i like.
What i like about the current form of Rome:
1.Single Player Map, that is, no more placing a stack of units and conquering the province, ability to place forts and outposts in strategic areas.
2.Graphics... terrain and the 2k poly units, nuff said ~:p
3.Better Diplomacy (hope the AI is good as well).
4.Animations, kinda over the top in some places from what i noticed in the trailers, preview videos and whatnot, but they are to my liking.
Wishlist(for future expansion):
1.Multiplayer Campaign!
2.Multiplayer Campiagn!
3.Multiplayer Campaign! ~

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Good thread!
This game will rule with an iron fist and we know it.
People should stop whining, nobody is going to get everything they wanted the way they wanted it, if only because our wishes are incompatible. Just mod and tweak it to your own preferences.
As for those 'fantasy' units - well, should they've filled 200 unit slots with just swords, spears and more swords? Of course not. They should've thrown in these dozen or so uncommon -but used in real warfare -units as they did.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Oops, forgot my wish list:
A good naval combat engine!

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Louis, while you're intitaled to your own opinoin, so are we. And if we want to try to think up ways to make the game better, is that so bad?
-
Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
1) One of the things I like is that with a city siege, you can actually place units inside buildings and spring ambushes on attackers. (I think I read that somewhere)
2) Elephants......need I say more???
3) "Realistic" naval movement.....However I will cuss long and loud when I lose my first invasion force to a bloody storm
4) Diplomacy is TOTALLY revamped, kinda' looks like AoE (yeah I know it's been said before)
5) And come on.......all you people out there that complain about the 'fantasy" units, you KNOW that you'll use them at least once just to see what they are all about. I know I will ~:)
I for one might not mod Rome...it all depends on how it plays.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Hurlers........nope
Pigs........nope
Druids........nope
Screaming women.....nope
You'll never see any of them in my armies....and if I was curious I'm sure I'll see them on the battlefield.....fielded by others

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Im a long time lurker, sometime poster. I have to say, this whole, "omfg this unit does not fit with my perception of what this era was really like decreases my immersion faction by 26.9756%" is getting a little bit rediculas.
Give CA some credit, they have delivered on 2 fantastic games so far, games nobody else has even approached genre/scale wise. While I think they are total twits for not putting in a multiplayer campaign they have earned SOME creative leeway for making units. Some of these units may not have existed, some of them were used, see pigs minus the flames. The fact is this is a game based on realism and history. This is not a realistic historical simulation. If it were there would be no point in playing the game, everything would happen on a time line and we would all know the results no point playing the game.
The entire premise of this game is based around whatif. What if the barbarians decided to throw heads at the romans to cause them to panick. This didnt happen, but whose to say some enterprising general in a different situation may have?
Nobody has a gun to your here forcing you to play with these units, I am very sure you can play and enjoy the game without ever having to employ these fanciful units. If your game experience is ruined because on your crusade to bring enlightenment to the eastern hordes, they use their women to fight I am very deeply sorry for you. My only advice is, have an open mind, nobody here actually lived in this time frame so to say unequivically "they did not exist" is ignorant. Probably did not exist, but you cannot be totally sure. The key here is could have. DEAL with it, if you don't like it don't use it and mod it out when you are able. Just be happy that people are complaining about a few unit choices rather than actually important things like game mechanics.
Disclaimer, some units here are more out there than others, and this post is directed at no one in particular, rather everyone who complains bitterly about a couple units they never have to use.

Nope. The game can have great playability, balance and still be historical accurate enough. But it is not.
You're wrong saying that in a realistic historical game everything would happen on a time line and we would all know the results no point playing the game. That is just not true. The initial conditions would be the exact same, historical accurate up to the units, but the rest would depend on the players.
In fact, the fact that CA is going the way of invention instead of a more accurate, responsible aproach, is an indication that the game itself will be all about eye-candy, nothing else. Notable exceptions are the improved strategical and diplomacy model. The fantasy units really detract from the historical immersion of the game. If the game is "inspired" by History why not to take into account it's gathered knowledge with more respect?

That is ludicrous in ALL but a Fantasy game... Have you understood the ridicule of your own words?

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
Guys, could you please stick to the topic, this was meant to be a focus on the good side
so here i go:
- 3D extravaganza, you got to be excited about that!
- distinctly different (playing) styles for different factions, should give a new dimension to the tactics side of the game
- Civilization style diplomacy, big improvement over the mtw system, now alliances may actually have some meaning: if you have half your allies' army on your territory you may be less inclined to break the alliance
- massive city sieges, i'm looking forward to an hour-long battle capturing Rome

No, that's not bad at all, and that's not what I tried to imply. I end up re-balancing/modding most of the games I play myself too.
My point is, no game will please everybody in every aspect. We will all find something in this game which we don't like, but it will be something different for each one. No point in wasting energy complaining about it, just mod it.
(Which makes me believe we may actually agree more with each other than we perhaps think we do...)

Cheers and happy gaming!

It's safe to say that most, if not ALL, of the knowledgeble guys that strive for Historical Accuracy are, and always have been, great fans of CA's work. Their concerns lay in the fact that CA might be losing it's edge. Diverting from the quality of heir previous work.

Re: Okay enough complaints about Rome list what you like and why you want it
LIST WHAT I WOULD LIKE & WHY I WANT IT
# A JOYSTICK OPTION ... for easier control, making the game keyboard free and more fluid .." no flat surface required" .. " 2d vs 3d " .. I think its a brilliant idea .
Afrit I understood your other point in your other thread !!, and I like your #2 & #3 # comments again here .
# IMPROVED STRATEGY MAP : for quicker identification of playing peice's on main maps :to make game less tedoius,Artillery peice , RED CROSS for injured , Directional Arrows to show headings ,we shouldn't have to use a memo pad , " Afrit" .
I invite you all to search for a list of my topics, I started ,I talk about my likes and wants ..haha
You should see my overall vision for the game is a good one .
cheers
Dimitrios,,
